1 Corinthians 10:1-11:1

In chapter ten Paul issues instructs us on how to run the race so as to not be disqualified…

1A.      Paul Warns Against Overconfidence (10:1-13)

1B.      The benefits of liberty (10:1-4)

Freedom (10:1)

Family (10:2)

Food (10:3-4)

2B.      The abuses of liberty (10:5-10)

Idolatry (10:5-7; Exodus 32)

Ø      Lust (epithymetes); to lust after something evil

Ø      Play (paizo); to dance make merry

Immorality (10:8; Numbers 25; Moab)

Trying God (10:9; Numbers 21; serpants)

Ø      Tempt (ekpeirazo); to test thoroughly.

Complaining (10:10; Numbers 16; )

Ø      Complained (gonguzo); to mutter, to say things in a low tone

Ø      Destroyed (olothreutes); the verb is used of the destroying angel who slew all Egypt’s first born sons (Hebrews 11:28)

3B.      The application of liberty (10:11-13)

Stand cautiously (10:11-12)

Ø      Take heed (blepo); Beware!

Resist temptation (10:13)

Ø      The source of all temptation is our flesh, the world or Satan.

1 John 2:16 For all that is in the world -- the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life -- is not of the Father but is of the world.

Ø      All temptation is controlled by God

“While God is the Orderer and Controller of sin, He is not the Author of it in the same way that He is the Author of good.  Sin could not proceed from a holy God by positive and direct creation, but only by decretive permission and negative action.”  (Pink, Attributes of God, 13-14)

Ø      God provides the means to escape sin.

Prayer (Mark 14:38)

Trust in the Lord

Focus on Jesus (Hebrews 12:3-4)

2A.      Paul tells the truth about idolatry (10:14-22)

1B.      Idolatry is dangerous to the individual.  (10:14-15)

Therefore we are “flee” it.

We commit idolatry by….

Questioning God’s character is idolatry

Worshiping God in the wrong way is idolatry (Exodus 32)

Worshiping any image is idolatry

Worshiping angels is idolatry

Colossians 2:18 Let no one cheat you of your reward, taking delight in false humility and worship of angels, intruding into those things which he has not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind,

Worshiping demons is idolatry

Worshiping dead men is idolatry (Psalm 106:28-29)

Supreme loyalty to anything other than God is idolatry (Matthew 6:21)

Covetousness is idolatry.  (Ephesians 5:5)

2B.      Idolatry is divisive to the church.  (10:16-21)

One of the primary purposes and symbols of the Lord’s Supper is unity within the body.  (10:16-18)

Paul’s point is we cannot be united to Christ and demons at the same time.  (10:19-21)

3B.      Idolatry is offensive God.  (10:22)

3A.      Paul encourages us to use our freedom for God’s Glory (10:23-11:1)

Edify (oikodomeo); to build a house, ie to build up

We are edified by the Word (Acts 20:32)

We are edified by love.  (1 Corinthians 14:3-4)

2B.      Others over self (10:24)

Philippians 2:3-4Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself.  Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.”

3B.      Liberty over legalism (10:25-27)
