INTRODUCTION

ROE VS.

WADE

On January 23, 1973, the U.S. Supreme Court in the case of Roe vs. Wade ruled the following: During the first trimester of pregnancy the decision to abort is left to the judgment of the woman and her attending physician.

After the first trimester, the State may regulate the credentials and the type of facility of those offering abortion services.

After fetal viability (ability to survive outside of womb), the State may regulate and even restrict abortions except when the life or health of the mother is endangered.

According to Dr. Bernard Nathason, this decision allowed virtual elective abortion "because of the sweeping way in which 'health' is used to cover every possible problem of mind and situation"(Aborting America, p. 210) The Court defined health as "all factors‑‑ physical, emotional, psychological, familial and the woman's age‑‑ relevant to the well‑being of the patient.

We have adopted a "quality of life" ethic rather than a "sanctity of life" ethic.

Problem is who and what determines "quality of life."

ABORTION DEATHS

Currently (1998) there are over 1.5 million abortions per year in America (one abortion per 2.8 live births).

This comes to over 4000 abortions everyday.

The total lives taken since legalization are MORE THAN THIRTY TIMES greater than the American casualties of all the United States' major wars.

For a total of 35 million murdered babies since 1973.

If you began today killing people in the Metro-Knoxville area at the same rate (4000~/day) no one would be alive to celebrate the Fourth of July (~~600,000 people~/150 days).

@ILL TEXT =  The most dangerous place in America is the mother's womb.

Every 20 seconds in this country a baby is torn from the mother's womb

@ILL TEXT = According to the American Association for Protecting Children (a division of the American Humane Association) the number of reported child abuse cased has increased from 669,000 in 1976 to 2,200,000 in 1986.

This 228% increase reflects more than just a greater tendency to report violence toward children.

The 1973 abortion‑on‑demand decision is not curbing child abuse, and its "disposable life" attitude is not content to have one ugly tentacle in womb ‑ it must have another in the nursery.

@ILL TEXT = Gosh, can you believe it's 2023 already?

I'm still writing '22 on nearly everything.

Seems like just yesterday I was sitting in  first grade celebrating the century change!

@ILL TEXT = I know we haven't really chatted since Christmas.

Sorry.

Anyway, I have some difficult news and I really didn't want to call and  talk face to face.

@ILL TEXT = Ted's had a promotion, and I should be up for a hefty raise this year if I keep putting in those crazy hours.

You know how I work  at it.

Yes, we're still struggling with the bills.

@ILL TEXT = Timmy's been okay at kindergarten although he complains about going.

But then he wasn't happy about day care either, so what can I do?

@ILL TEXT = He's been a real problem, Mom.

He's a good kid but quite honestly, he's an unfair burden at this time in our lives.

Ted and I  have talked this through and through and finally made a choice.

Plenty of other families have made it and are much better off.

@ILL TEXT = Our pastor is supportive and says hard decisions sometimes are necessary.

The family is a system and the demands of one member shouldn't be allowed to ruin the whole.

He told us to be prayerful, consider ALL the factors and do what is right to make the family work.

He says that even though he probably wouldn't do it himself, the decision really is ours.

He was kind enough to refer us to a children's clinic near here, so at least that part's easy.

I do feel sorry for the little guy.

I think he overheard Ted and me talking about 'it' the other night.

I turned around and saw him standing at the bottom step in his pj's and the little bear you gave him under his arm and his eyes sort of welling up.

@ILL TEXT = Mom, the way he looked at me just about broke my heart.

But I honestly believe this is better for Timmy too.

It's not fair to force him to live in a family that can't give him the time and attention he deserves.

And PLEASE don't give me the kind of grief Grandma gave you over your abortions.

It is the same thing, you know.

@ILL TEXT = We've told him he's just going for a vaccination.

Anyway, they say the termination procedure is painless.

I guess it's just as well you haven't seen that much of him.
