1 Corinthians 12:8

INTRODUCTION

Basic Truths

They are supernatural gifts

They are sovereign gifts

They are supportive gifts

Three types of Gifts...

The Speaking Gifts

The Serving Gifts

The Sign Gifts

Speaking gifts: God given abilities to speak a word for the Lord!

This goes beyond the command to witness the Lord gave all believers

Ø      We are all commanded to be witnesses - these are gifted to speak for God in a special way.

1A.      The Foundational Gifts (1 Corinthians 12:8)

1B.      The gift of knowledge

This is the ability to perceive and understand the truths of God’s Word.

2B.      The gift of wisdom

This is the ability to make skillful and practical application of the truth.

This is the application of information

Acts 6:10 And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the Spirit by which he spoke.

Luke 21:15 for I will give you a mouth and wisdom which all your adversaries will not be able to contradict or resist.

These gifts are given to enable the believer to speak for God in various situations.

2A.      The Functional Gifts (Romans 12:6-8)

1B.      The gift of preaching (12:6)

“Prophesy” to tell forth and to fore tell

The God-given ability to proclaim the Word

Ephesians 4:8, 11 Therefore He says: When He ascended on high, He led captivity captive, And gave gifts to men.  11And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers,

Ø      The office of the Apostle, to be an apostle you had to be an eyewitness of the resurrected Jesus.  This also speaks of the function of a missionary (to send forth).

Ø      The office of prophet, in the NT day they were gifted men who spoke the literal word of God (before the closing of the canon).  The function today is that of the preacher!  (Ephesians 2:20)

Preaching is the supernatural ability to proclaim the Word of God!

Preaching is the central work of the New Testament Church.

When preachers preach...

Ø      God’s people are built up, cheered up, and shored up!

1 Corinthians 14:3 But he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men.

Ø      Lost people are convicted and converted!

1 Corinthians 14:24-25 But if all prophesy, and an unbeliever or an uninformed person comes in, he is convinced by all, he is convicted by all.  25 And thus the secrets of his heart are revealed; and so, falling down on his face, he will worship God and report that God is truly among you.

2B.      The gift of teaching (12:7)

The God-given ability to explain the Word!

Matthew 28:19-20 "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen.

Ephesians 4:11 And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers,

This is more than the ability to impart knowledge, it involves application!

3B.      The gift of exhortation/encouragement (12:8)

The God-given ability to encourage by the Word!

This gift can be practiced publicly and privately!

This is more than a spiritual cheerleader...

Ø      They cheer, challenge, and counsel!

These are folks who can help you see God’s hand on a dark night!

Barnabas = the son of encouragement
