Sermon Series: Messiah in the Psalms
Message Title: Psalm 2: The Reign of the Lord’s Anointed.
Scripture: Psalm 2
Pray
The Reign of the Lord’s Anointed.
1 Why are the nations in an uproar And the peoples devising a vain thing? 2 The kings of the earth take their stand And the rulers take counsel together Against the Lord and against His Anointed, saying, 3 “Let us tear their fetters apart And cast away their cords from us!”
4 He who sits in the heavens laughs, The Lord scoffs at them. 5 Then He will speak to them in His anger And terrify them in His fury, saying, 6 “But as for Me, I have installed My King Upon Zion, My holy mountain.”
7 “I will surely tell of the decree of the Lord: He said to Me, ‘You are My Son, Today I have begotten You. 8 ‘Ask of Me, and I will surely give the nations as Your inheritance, And the very ends of the earth as Your possession. 9 ‘You shall break them with a rod of iron, You shall shatter them like earthenware.’”
10 Now therefore, O kings, show discernment; Take warning, O judges of the earth. 11 Worship the Lord with reverence And rejoice with trembling. 12 Do homage to the Son, that He not become angry, and you perish in the way, For His wrath may soon be kindled. How blessed are all who take refuge in Him!

Psalm 2 a four-fold picture.
· Vs 1-3, We have the nations raging against God
· Vs 4-6, the Lord scoffs at the nations who rise against Him
· Vs 7-9, A decree given to a Son
· Vs 10-12, Advice from the voice of the Son directed toward the nations who rage
Vs. 1-3
1 Why are the nations in an uproar And the peoples devising a vain thing? 2 The kings of the earth take their stand And the rulers take counsel together Against the Lord and against His Anointed, saying, 3 “Let us tear their fetters apart And cast away their cords from us!”
· The Psalm opens with a question posed by the author.
· Charles Spurgeon comments
“We have, in these first three verses, a description of the hatred of human nature against the Christ of God… The Psalm begins abruptly with an angry interrogation; and well it may: it is surely but little to be wondered at, that the sight of creatures in arms against their God should amaze the psalmist's mind. We see the heathen raging, roaring like the sea, tossed to and fro with restless waves, as the ocean in a storm; and then we mark the people in their hearts imagining a vain thing against God.”[1]
· Spurgeon points out the amazement of the Psalmist
· How could we rise up against God?
Click #1
This speaks to the hatred that sin can create if left unchecked
· The hearts of the people are so filled with hate for God that they devise plans to rise up against Him
V. 2- The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers take council together.
· Kings, leaders, those in power lash out at God
· They are driven by pride as they cling to their own power
They take council to rise up against both the Lord and His Anointed
Not only are they rising up against the Creator, they are rising up against the Savior
They refuse to submit to God’s authority as our creator
Click #2
2. They also refuse to accept His gift of Salvation
This is difficult to believe that a human could have such a hardened heart against God
Paul- Ephesians 4:17-19
17 So this I say, and affirm together with the Lord, that you walk no longer just as the Gentiles also walk, in the futility of their mind,
18 being darkened in their understanding, be excluded from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the hardness of their heart;
19 and they, having become callous, have given themselves over to sensuality for the practice of every kind of impurity with greediness.

3. Paul speaks of the futility of the mind apart from God
Futile is worthless
Without hope, without peace
Clinging to the promises of a dying world
Paul says those who refuse God become callous and their heart are hardened
they are given over to sensuality and greed
it is this type of person that lashes out at God
it is this type of person that fights against the Holy Spirit
this speaks of to the truth of God
why would someone have hatred in their heart for a lie
the hardness of someones heart proves the reality of God
V3. “Let us tear their fetters apart and cast away their cords from us.”
Fetters- shackles, chains a restraint
Click
4. These earthly rulers are driven to remove the chains that bind them
They claim that God restrains them
This is the same evil lie we find in the Garden
The serpent deceived Eve by saying if she eats of the fruit, she will be like God
Implying that God was restricting knowledge
God was holding something back that was not allowed
in this lie, God represses something
Pagan and New age religions are founded on this same claim
Many of these evil religions believe that the God of the Bible restricts our knowledge by keeping things from us
In their view, we are obligated to break the restraints
V4-6: God’s Response
V4. “He who sits in the heavens laughs, the Lord Scoffs at them.”
This is the right response of an All powerful God looking upon His Creation who are in rebellion
What can they do; what power do they have over God?
What power does our enemy have over God and us? None
None over us, unless we give it to him
V5-6. “Then He will speak to them in His anger And terrify them in His fury, saying,
6 “But as for Me, I have installed My King Upon Zion, My holy mountain.”
Click
5. God responds in anger at the pride of humanity
He says He will terrify them in His fury
I want you to notice the source of the terror
The source of the terror that strikes the hearts of those who practice evil is found in V6.
“But as for Me, I have installed My King Upon Zion, My holy mountain.”
Terror fills the hearts of those who practice evil, because

6. The King has been installed on Mt. Zion!
Jesus is that King!
Jesus strikes fear into the hearts of those who fight against God because He is our eternal King
He is coming back to rule with an iron rod
He is coming back to pour out judgement upon al those who hate God
If you have never put your faith in King Jesus, I pray that you do it now
2 more things we are going to touch on in this verse
Mountain: a place of authority

2 Now it will come about that

In the last days

The mountain of the house of the LORD

Will be established as the chief of the mountains,

And will be raised above the hills;

And all the nations will stream to it.

3 And many peoples will come and say,

“Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD,

To the house of the God of Jacob;

That He may teach us concerning His ways

And that we may walk in His paths.”

For the law will go forth from Zion

And the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.

V.7-9: The decree of the Anointed
V7

“I will surely tell of the decree of the LORD:

He said to Me, ‘You are My Son,

Today I have begotten You.

This is the voice of the Anointed
The voice of the One who has been installed as King over Zion
It is Jesus
Jesus is repeating the His commission
He reminds us that he is the begotten Son of God
V8

‘Ask of Me, and I will surely give the nations as Your inheritance,

And the very ends of the earth as Your possession.

Jesus repeats the promise of the Father
9. He came to take His people as His inheritance
He came to establish His authority on the earth
V9

‘You shall abreak them with a rod of iron,

You shall shatter them like earthenware.’ ”

Jesus again repeating His Commission
He came to rule with a rod of Iron
His authority will not fail
V10-12

Now therefore, O kings, show discernment;

Take warning, O judges of the earth.

11 Worship the LORD with areverence

And rejoice with trembling.

12 Do homage to the Son, that He not become angry, and you perish in the way,

For His wrath may soon be kindled.

How blessed are all who take refuge in Him!

This appears to be the same voice speaking in verses 7-9
It is the voice of Jesus but this time He is offering a warning
Jesus directs His warning to those who rise up against God
To the leaders of the earth
He warns them to use discernment
use you brains
Worship the Lord with reverence
Recognize that God is sovereign
In turn submit to His authority
10. Rejoice with trembling
