1 Corinthians 8:1
1 Corinthians 8:1
8 starts out with the word Now, it is a word of transition. He was going from one topic or point to a new one. And it also shows us that this was a problem that had probably been brought to Paul’s attention and he is addressing it.

Things sacrificed to idols, to understand this text we need to understand where Corinth was and also what the people of Corinth were going through.

When we read scripture we or at least I always pictured middle eastern landscapes and middle eastern people, but there is so much more to the landscape and people. Corinth was a city in Greece about 50 miles from Athens. These were people of a Pagan religion. In fact, they were polytheistic and polydemonistic they believed in many gods and many evil spirits.

They believed that evil spirits possessed people by attaching themselves to food and when it would be ingested they would become possessed by the evil spirit. So, to thwart this they would sacrifice the food to their gods before eating it. Burning or scorching it. They would also sell this sacrificed food at market.

This “sacrifice to the gods” would not only gain favor with the gods but also cleanse the food of the demonic contamination. He, Paul, is writing this letter to the people in the church of Corinth, to ensure them that there is no other God, all of Greece’s gods are not real so eating food sacrificed to them is not a problem.

Now concerning things sacrificed to idols, we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge makes arrogant, but love edifies.
Knowledge makes arrogant, but love edifies, edifies means to improve someone morally or intellectually. Knowledge makes us arrogant but knowledge with love improves us morally or intellectually. Brings proper wisdom.

Turn to 1 Corin 13:1-4
If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but do not have love, I have become a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.
If I have the gift of prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge; and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing.
And if I give all my possessions to feed the poor, and if I surrender my body to be burned, but do not have love, it profits me nothing.
Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant,
does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered,
does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth;
bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
Love never fails; but if there are gifts of prophecy, they will be done away; if there are tongues, they will cease; if there is knowledge, it will be done away.
All these things are the works that God desires of His children to possess, but they are all dead works if they are not done out of Love for the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

The key to all things is LOVE....The key to faith is love, a love for the Trinity.

Love is the reason we can and will obey the Lord. If you love me keep my commands.

We love, because He first loved us.
If someone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for the one who does not love his brother whom he has seen, cannot love God whom he has not seen.
And this commandment we have from Him, that the one who loves God should love his brother also.
Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and whoever loves the Father loves the child born of Him.
By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and observe His commandments.
For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome.
For whatever is born of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.
Who is the one who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

8:7 The consciences of some newer converts were still accusing them strongly with regard to allowing them to eat idol food without feeling spiritually corrupted and guilty. They still imagined that idols were real and evil. A defiled conscience is on that has been violated, bringing fear, shame and guilt.
