INTRO - I Timoteo 1:11
11. This verse sums up the section from verse 8 onwards. Paul has not been speaking about the law according to his own opinion but about what conforms to the glorious gospel. The Greek here literally means ‘the gospel of the glory of the blessed God’, which is more expressive than the NIV translation (with AV and RSV), because it connects the glory with the central figure of the drama rather than to the drama itself. The same word is found as a genitive of content in 2 Corinthians 4:4–6, where it describes the gospel as a manifestation of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
The word blessed is applied to God only here and in 6:15, but the usage is frequent in Philo. It describes God not as the object of blessing, but as experiencing within himself the perfection of bliss. Such a thought accords well with the splendour which he radiates through the gospel.
