Intro/Welcome

What was one of the most exhilarating moments of your life?
One example for me:
having a baby? having a boy? winning a close game?
I could have sang a song.
natural expression of exhilaration
all enjoyment spontaneously overflows into praise…. readers their favorite poet, walkers praising the countryside, players praising their favorite game….we delight to praise what we enjoy because the praise not merely expresses but completes the enjoyment"
What about you?
A song is a story put to melody
a human story, of love, passion, longing, tragedy...
Today we look at one of the oldest songs ever recorded
possibly the oldest part of exodus
Moses and the People have experienced God’s saving work and they are exhilarated, they are exalting the Lord God
One of the reasons we gather here on a Sunday is to CELEBRATE who God is and what God has done, and what GOD is doing in our midst.
One of the ways we do that is through song
song is a story put to melody

God is Writing a Story…and he’s not done yet

Why does Exodus matter to your life?
God is writing a story, and he’s not done yet.
Exodus is Season 2 of his 66 Seasons Series that we get to binge on

God is still writing His Story
And he is not done yet
God is on the move, are you with Him?
And you and I get to be a part of it.
if you don't know the Gid of the Bible, he is after you
he desires a relationship with you
Life doesn't work without God
What will this look like?

Their Story is Our Story

1 Cor 10:1-2, 11 For I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, 2 and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea...11 Now these things happened to them as an example, but they were written down for our instruction, on whom the end of the ages has come.
The symbolism and connections are so rich.
They were a people under bondage (Egypt) as were we (under sin).
They were delivered not by their own power but God the power of God, so are we (Saved by the Cross).
There was a sacrifice for sin so that by faith they would be passed over, (so are we through the blood of Christ).
They exited Egypt and entered the wilderness on their way to the promise land and so are we having been saved from sin, we now are in the wilderness of the world on our way to the promised land (heaven).
God’s presence was with them all the way and set them apart as distinct to provide for them, protected them and empower them, we to Have God’s presence through the spirit to protected us, provide for us and empower us.
God saved them to be a light to the nations, and God has called us to be salt and light to the nations.
Exodus is the story of God redeeming his people for his purposes.
It then is a picture of what it looks like to walk with God.

Walking with God

What will Exodus show us about walking with God?
Exodus 14:30-31 Thus the Lord saved Israel that day from the hand of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians dead on the seashore. 31 Israel saw the great power that the Lord used against the Egyptians, so the people feared the Lord, and they believed in the Lord and in his servant Moses.
It begins by believing in the Lord, having Faith, trust, confidence in Him and what he has done, is doing and will do.
They departed Egypt (Exodus) but were entering the wilderness

A Personal Relationship w/ God

This results in a personal relationship with God.
Look at Exodus 15:1-2 (Also Rev 15:3)
Exod 15:1-2 Then Moses and the Israelites sang this song to the Lord. They said: I will sing to the Lord, for he is highly exalted; he has thrown the horse and its rider into the sea.
2 The Lord is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation. This is my God, and I will praise him, my father’s God, and I will exalt him.
This is truly Magnificent
God has saved a people for himself, to be His People.
This was God’s plan from the beginning and it is how it will end.
If we have believed in God’s saving work on our behalf, we are his people
more than that, we are his children
John 1:12–13 ESV
12 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, 13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.
This is in direct contrast to Pharaoh depicted a few verses later.
Exod 15:9 The enemy said, ‘I will pursue, I will overtake, I will divide the spoil, my desire shall have its fill of them. I will draw my sword; my hand shall destroy them.’
This is all who are without God, who are ungodly
Their God is themselves.
life doesn't work apart from God, it didn't end well for pharaoh
But for those who believe in his saving work
God has become personal to them
Do you have a personal relationship with God?
Moses did, the Israelites did.
What did this look like?
We will see in the coming weeks.
But how does any good relationship work?
Presence
You have to be presence.
God has promised to be present with you.
Now in a more profound way than ever.
John 14:17 He is the Spirit of truth. The world is unable to receive him because it doesn’t see him or know him. But you do know him, because he remains with you and will be in you.
John 14:23 Jesus answered, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.
Trust
You have to trust God.
Every good relationship is based on trust.
in greek Trust = Faith
Love
Relationships are based on Love
God has proven his love for you at the cross, by rescuing you.
to bring you to himself.
Our love for Him grows out of this experience, this knowing
that Christ died for me
that Christ lives in me
Obedience
You want to please your friends
Your spouse.
Similarly, when we love God we want to please him
We do what he says.
This is what Jesus teaches us, if we love him we will obey him.
We obey him becuase we love him.
We love him becuase he first loved us.
Romans 1:5, 16:26 “The Obedience of Faith”
When we have a relationship like this with God we get to know him more and more
and thus get to see him more clearly
Did you know our biggest problems is that we don’t see God as he is?
We have been blinded by sin.
beautiful, glorious in all of his goodness and power.
If we saw him, we would come to him
John 4:10 CSB
10 Jesus answered, “If you knew the gift of God, and who is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would ask him, and he would give you living water.”
Our mission is to make Jesus known, to make Jesus seen
for the City Nations and Generations.
Jude 5 CSB
5 Now I want to remind you, although you came to know all these things once and for all, that Jesus saved a people out of Egypt and later destroyed those who did not believe;
How do we get to know him?
God’s Word, God’s People and God’s Spirit.

When we experience God’s glory and goodness in our life, we will praise God as Moses does in this song.
and we will praise him and serve him with the song of our life.

Exodus shows us our Lord and Savior

Lastly, Exodus shows us who our God is, our Lord and Savior.
Look at the Song of Moses
His Glory and Power
Exod 15:3 The Lord is a warrior; the Lord is his name.
Exod 15:6 Lord, your right hand is glorious in power. Lord, your right hand shattered the enemy.
Exod 15:11-13 Lord, who is like you among the gods? Who is like you, glorious in holiness, revered with praises, performing wonders? 12 You stretched out your right hand, and the earth swallowed them. 13 With your faithful love, you will lead the people you have redeemed; you will guide them to your holy dwelling with your strength.
Fear of his enemies
Exod 15:14-16 When the peoples hear, they will shudder; anguish will seize the inhabitants of Philistia. 15 Then the chiefs of Edom will be terrified; trembling will seize the leaders of Moab; all the inhabitants of Canaan will panic; 16 terror and dread will fall on them. They will be as still as a stone because of your powerful arm until your people pass by, Lord, until the people whom you purchased pass by.
Where God is leading us:
Exod 15:17-18 You will bring them in and plant them on the mountain of your possession; Lord, you have prepared the place for your dwelling; Lord, your hands have established the sanctuary. 18 The Lord will reign forever and ever!
The Lord is taking us somewhere
Following the Lord is never a stagnate life
I was talking to someone last week and we just marveled at what God has done over the last year.
Think about that:
If you followed God last year, what did God do in your life?
God has a plan for his people
He is taking them on a journey of trust, faith, love, obedience to His Glory.
There is no better path to be on.
Are you following God?
Exodus will teach us how.
We want to hear stories — share with us.

Closing

A song is a story put to melody
Moses sings the Song of God’s Saving Works
What God has done, what he IS doing and what he has promised to do
In that he is singing the story of God’s People
As we close, will you commit to following God this year
learn from exodus (1 Cor 10) what that looks like.
At the end of 2021, what song will you sing about what God has done, is doing and will do?
