By the year 112, Ignatius, leader of the Christian church in Antioch of Syria, could urge fellow believers to “follow the bishop as Jesus Christ followed the father.”[8] His injunction revealed the emergence of a system of church organization constructed around locally powerful bishops who were assuming the tasks of guiding the faithful in their localities while deliberating with fellow bishops in other places about the general direction of the church. At least by the time that Ignatius made this reference to bishops, there were also circulating among the expanding Christian congregations two collections of Christian documents—one, the fourfold gospel account of the life of Christ recorded by Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, the other collection containing copies of ten to thirteen letters from the apostle Paul. It was not long until these two collections would be permanently joined by the Acts of the Apostles to constitute a “new testament” of sacred writings to set alongside the “old testament” of the Hebrew Scriptures and so provide authoritative written guidance for the church.

One topic the Bible thoroughly covers is itself; that is, the Bible tells us what God thinks about his very words.

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,
For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.
so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth;
it shall not return to me empty,
but it shall accomplish that which I purpose,
and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.
Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.
For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.
Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.
Here is what our Baptist Faith and Message 2000 says about the Bible.
I. The Scriptures
I. The Scriptures
The Holy Bible was written by men divinely inspired and is God’s revelation of Himself to man. It is a perfect treasure of divine instruction. It has God for its author, salvation for its end, and truth, without any mixture of error, for its matter. Therefore, all Scripture is totally true and trustworthy. It reveals the principles by which God judges us, and therefore is, and will remain to the end of the world, the true center of Christian union, and the supreme standard by which all human conduct, creeds, and religious opinions should be tried. All Scripture is a testimony to Christ, who is Himself the focus of divine revelation.
Exodus 24:4; Deuteronomy 4:1-2; 17:19; Joshua 8:34; Psalms 19:7-10; 119:11,89,105,140; Isaiah 34:16; 40:8; Jeremiah 15:16; 36:1-32; Matthew 5:17-18; 22:29; Luke 21:33; 24:44-46; John 5:39; 16:13-15; 17:17; Acts 2:16ff.; 17:11; Romans 15:4; 16:25-26; 2 Timothy 3:15-17; Hebrews 1:1-2; 4:12; 1 Peter 1:25; 2 Peter 1:19-21.
God’s opinion of his words can be broken down into four general categories: authority, clarity, necessity, and sufficiency.

The Authority of the Bible
The Authority of the Bible
All the words in the Bible are God’s words. Therefore, to disbelieve or disobey them is to disbelieve or disobey God himself.
The phrase “Thus says the Lord” is a mark of authority.

The New Testament often quotes the Old Testament. Further, it validates itself as well. (see 2 Peter 3:16)
as he does in all his letters when he speaks in them of these matters. There are some things in them that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other Scriptures.
Therefore, since the Bible affirms that it is the very words of God, we are to seek to understand those words, for in doing so, we are seeking to understand God himself. We are to seek to trust the words of Scripture, for in doing so, we are seeking to trust God himself. And we are to seek to obey the words of Scripture, for in doing so, we are seeking to obey God himself.

The Clarity of Scripture
The Clarity of Scripture
Although some passages may at first seem difficult to grasp, the Bible is written in such a way that all things necessary to become a Christian, live as a Christian, and grow as a Christian are clear.
The law of the Lord is perfect,
reviving the soul;
the testimony of the Lord is sure,
making wise the simple;
The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.
That means our understanding of scripture has more to do with our spiritual condition than our intellectual condition.
As Grudem says,
When individuals disagree on the proper interpretation of a passage of Scripture, the problem does not lie with the Scriptures, for God guided its composition so that it could be understood.

The Necessity of Scripture
The Necessity of Scripture
All things necessary to become a Christian, live as a Christian, and grow as a Christian are clearly presented in the Bible.
All things necessary to become a Christian, live as a Christian, and grow as a Christian are clearly presented in the Bible.
It is also true that without the Bible we could not know these things. The necessity of Scripture means that it is necessary to read the Bible or have someone tell us what is in the Bible if we are going to know God personally, have our sins forgiven, and know with certainty what God wants us to do.
How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching?
and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.
But he answered, “It is written,
“ ‘Man shall not live by bread alone,
but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’ ”
Just as our physical lives are maintained by daily nourishment with physical food, so our spiritual lives are maintained by daily nourishment with the Word of God.

To neglect regular reading of the Bible is detrimental to the health of our souls.

How do you feel about that statement?

The Sufficiency of Scripture
The Sufficiency of Scripture
Today, the Bible contains all the words of God that a person needs to become a Christian, live as a Christian, and grow as a Christian. In order to be “blameless” before God, we just have to obey his Word:
Blessed are those whose way is blameless,
who walk in the law of the Lord!

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
This is what it means for scripture to be sufficient.
What about when the Bible does not speak to a specific topic?
What about when the Bible does not speak to a specific topic?
We have to avoid placing our opinion or context on par with scripture.
For instance, in the days of Constantine, the roman emperor, christians believed, and taught, that Rome would usher in the millennial reign.
In the same way, with regard to living the Christian life, the sufficiency of Scripture reminds us that nothing is sin that is not forbidden by Scripture either explicitly or by implication. Therefore, we are not to add prohibitions where we don’t believe Scripture is precise enough.
Questions for Review and Application
Questions for Review and Application
1. Why is it important that the Bible be the basis for our beliefs?
2. Will the Bible definitively answer every question we bring to it? Why or why not?
3. What is one issue that the Bible speaks clearly on? What is one issue that the Bible does not speak clearly on? How does this affect the emphasis you should place on these issues?
