What are conflicts we know when it comes to worship?
Should we raise our hands? Should we bow our knees?
We need new and modern music! - We need songs with rich heritage and tradition.
Our services are not exciting - Our services are no revent - Our services are not relevant - Our services are not inspiring ...
All of these conflicts are to be taken seriously. We need to find solutions to keep the body of Christ unified.
Non of these conflicts are concerned with object of Worship - the person whom we worship, but with the form of worship - how we worship.
The real conflict about worship is about the object of Worship - Is God really only worthy of worship?

I. Worship is spiritual struggle

I am the Lord; that is my name;
my glory I give to no other,
nor my praise to carved idols. (Jes 42,8).
Who deserves the glory? Is God the God he said he is?

God and Satan want our worship

God desires it for his glory and for our good, the fulfillment of our humanity (meaning, worth, renewal) - worshipped, because he is worthy
Satan desires it to mock God and to destroy us - worshipped, because he decives

True worship is a spiritual fight

Worship hinders the work of Satan
Ignatius of Antioch (110) "Be careful to gather often to give thanks and praise to God. For if you come together regularly in the same place, the powers of Satan will destroy you, and his 'fiery darts' that want to push you back into sin will be powerless. For your unity and harmonious faith bring about his destruction, and the torment of his helpers."
Israel was a worshipping army
Let the godly exult in glory;
let them sing for joy on their beds.
Let the high praises of God be in their throats
and two-edged swords in their hands. (Ps 149,5–6).
National conflicts in Bibel times were political and spiritual (Goliath mocks the God of Israel. The

But if you say to me, “We trust in the LORD our God,” is it not he whose high places and altars Hezekiah has removed, saying to Judah and to Jerusalem, “You shall worship before this altar”? 8 Come now, make a wager with my master the king of Assyria: I will give you two thousand horses, if you are able on your part to set riders on them. 9 How then can you repulse a single captain among the least of my master’s servants, when you trust in Egypt for chariots and for horsemen? 10 Moreover, is it without the LORD that I have come up against this land to destroy it? The LORD said to me, “Go up against this land and destroy it

18 Beware lest Hezekiah mislead you by saying, “The LORD will deliver us.” Has any of the gods of the nations delivered his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria? 19 Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim? Have they delivered Samaria out of my hand? 20 Who among all the gods of these lands have delivered their lands out of my hand, that the LORD should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?’ ”

The church is a spiritual army

Strong against the gates of hell (Matthew 16:18)
Equipped for spiritual battle (Ephesians 6:10-20)
Sharing in Christ’s victory (2Cor 2:14-16)

II. The Conflicts of Worship

The conflicts of worship are about the object of worship - Is God really only worthy of worship?

1. Satan vs. God (Isaiah 14,12-14)

How you are fallen from heaven,

O Day Star, son of Dawn!

How you are cut down to the ground,

you who laid the nations low!

13  You said in your heart,

‘I will ascend to heaven;

above the stars of God

I will set my throne on high;

I will sit on the mount of assembly

in the far reaches of the north;

14  I will ascend above the heights of the clouds;

I will make myself like the Most High

Conflict

Satan questioned that God should be only worthy of worship.
Leaving his God-given position “I will ascend
Positioning himself above all angels “above the stars of God
Assuming divine authority “I will set my throne on high, I will sit on the mount of the assembly
Proclaiming himself worth of Worship just like God “I will make myself like the Most High
Judgment of God “But you are brought down

Result

Sin entered creation
Satan in stripped of heavenly office, position and authority
Satan is thrown out of heaven down to earth

Lesson

The holiness of God will always resist the proud.

2. Satan vs. Man (Genesis 3)

Conflict

Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the LORD God had made.

He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” 2 And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, 3 but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’ ” 4 But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. 5 For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” 6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. 7 Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.

Man questioned, that God is only worthy of worship.
Began to doubt God “Did God actually say”
Desire to be more, to be independent “Your eyes will be opend… makes on wise”
Idea to be worthy of worship like God “You will be like God”

Result

Sin entered humanity
Satan becomes ruler of earth - his agenda suceeded
Reconciliation of worship requires sacrifice

Lesson

Since the fall, man is always in conflict putting God first

3. Man vs. Man (Genesis 4,1-8)

Conflict

Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, saying, “I have gotten a man with the help of the LORD.” 2 And again, she bore his brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, and Cain a worker of the ground. 3 In the course of time Cain brought to the LORD an offering of the fruit of the ground, 4 and Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat portions. And the LORD had regard for Abel and his offering, 5 but for Cain and his offering he had no regard. So Cain was very angry, and his face fell. 6 The LORD said to Cain, “Why are you angry, and why has your face fallen? 7 If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is contrary to you, but you must rule over it.”

8 Cain spoke to Abel his brother. And when they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel and killed him

Conflict between those who believe God, and those who want to appease God.

By faith Abel offered to God a more acceptable sacrifice than Cain, through which he was commended as righteous, God commending him by accepting his gifts. And through his faith, though he died, he still speaks

Spiritual sacrifice - pleasing to God, offered in faith
Carnal sacrifice - pleasing to men, offered in calculation

Result

First murder
A dynsaty of unblieving families

Lesson

In a fallen world there will be conflict over worship.

4. Satan vs. Christ

Conflict

8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 9 And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” 10 Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written,

“ ‘You shall worship the Lord your God

and him only shall you serve.’ ”

11 Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him.

Satan is appealing to Christ’s humanity - fear of suffering, the easy road, dersire for power and authority
Jesus responds from human perspective by citing a command given to the people of Israel
But Jesus also responds in his divine authority and sends him away “be gone”

Result

The worthiness of God as single object of worship is affirmed
Jesus receives God’s blessing and care

Lesson

True worship of God is in the best interst of man.

5. The final conflict

Revealed Authority (Joh 5,22-23)

22 For the Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son, 23 that all may honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him.

Universal Veneration (Rev 5,13)

13 And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, saying,

“To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb

be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever!”

Righteous Judgement (Mat 25,41)

41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.

Everlasting Worship (Rev 22,3-4)

3 No longer will there be anything accursed, but the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him. 4 They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads.

Perfect, unhindered, eternal face-to-face worship
No sin, direct access, full revelation - perfect worship.

Conclusion

Worship is a spiritual struggle about who gets the worship.
We share in the victory of Christ.
Struggle - Satan vs. God “The holiness of God will always resist the proud.”
Struggle - Satan vs. Man “Since the fall, man is always in conflict putting God first”
Struggle - Man vs. Man “In a fallen world there will be conflict over worship.”
Struggle - Satan vs. Christ “True worship of God is in the best interst of man.”
Struggle - The final conflict “Perfect worship is the holy response of a call-out nation before the face of God.”
