Romans 10:5–10 KJV 1900
For Moses describeth the righteousness which is of the law, That the man which doeth those things shall live by them. But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise, Say not in thine heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down from above:) Or, Who shall descend into the deep? (that is, to bring up Christ again from the dead.) But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

Pre-Sermon Ice Breaker

When Beethoven passed away, he was buried in a church yard. A couple of days later, the town drunk was walking through the cemetery and heard some strange noise coming from the area where Beethoven was buried. Terrified the drunk ran and got the priest to come and listen to it. The priest bent close to the grave and heard some faint, unrecognizable music coming from the grave. frightened, the priest ran and got the town magistrate. When the magistrate arrived, he bend his ear to the grave, listened for a moment, and said, “Ah yes, that’s Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, being played backwards.” He listened a while longer and said, “There’s the Eighth Symphony, being played backwards, too. Most puzzling.” So the magistrate kept listening. There’s the Seventh…the Sixth…the Fifth.” Suddenly the realization of what was happening dawned on the magistrate; he stood up and announced to the crowd that had gathered at the cemetery, “My fellow citizens, there’s nothing to worry about. It’s just Beethoven decomposing.”

Introduction

You may have noticed I like to cook.
One of my favorite pass times is watching cooking shows. It all started with Emeril, then progressed to Rachel Ray, the Barefoot Contessa, and the contests like Chopped, The British Baking Show and my all time Favorite Top Chef. I have learned all kinds of things about cooking . I learned you just don’t plop things down when your done cooking, you plate them. I have learned that people just don’t help in the kitchen, they are Sue Chef’s. And if you want just a taste of something it is not a nibble it is an Amuse Bouche. If you have watched these shows you may have noticed that a very trendy thing to do is create a dish that is deconstructed. They take elements of a dish like macaroni and cheese deconstruct it and put it together in a different way, so that when you eat it it tastes like and reminds you of the original. The idea is stolen from other disciplines. The basic idea is that in order to understand things which are composed of a number of disparate elements, you must separate them into those elements and understand each of them, as well as the synergy which results from their combination.
In 2021 we are memorizing Scripture. During the month of January we have been memorizing scriptures that have to do with Salvation. In an earlier message we learned the Nature of Salvation when we looked at 2 Corinthians 5:17
2 Corinthians 5:17 KJV 1900
Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
The Nature of Salvation is that we become New Creatures in Christ as a result of New Birth.
John 3:3 KJV 1900
Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
But how does one become born again. To understand this one event. Today we will deconstruct salvation and understand its components. Various components of one act.
In order to do this we must understand that while we are memorizing verses of Scripture. A single verse of Scripture does not a doctrine make.
2 Timothy 2:15 KJV 1900
Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
In order to understand what the Bible teaches we must look at Scripture in the context that they are written. In our message today we are going to look at the context that we find our memory verse in. And then compare Scripture with Scripture to come to an understanding of what it means. As we do this I would encourage you to remember 2 things.
Don’t get caught in the trap of proof texting. Taking a verse out of context to make mean something it doesn’t.
Don’t be fooled by the intellectual elite into thinking you can’t understand the Bible. Some will make you believe that if you don’t have a theology degree, if you can’t read Hebrew and Greek, you cannot understand Scripture. That is a lie straight out of the pit of hell.
1 John 2:27 KJV 1900
But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.
In our text today Paul has been comparing the difference between righteousness by by the law and the righteousness that is by faith. This results in identifying the components of Salvation. Let’s walk with Paul through the three steps of discovery that he takes in our text.

Body

The Observation of the Components of Salvation

Romans 10:8 KJV 1900
But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach;
Paul says that what he is talking about is near you. He quotes
Deuteronomy 30:12–14 KJV 1900
It is not in heaven, that thou shouldest say, Who shall go up for us to heaven, and bring it unto us, that we may hear it, and do it? Neither is it beyond the sea, that thou shouldest say, Who shall go over the sea for us, and bring it unto us, that we may hear it, and do it? But the word is very nigh unto thee, in thy mouth, and in thy heart, that thou mayest do it.
So What are the components of Righteousness by Faith they are your mouth and your heart. This should not be surprising to us. The Bible has spoken of these again and again.
Proverbs 18:21 KJV 1900
Death and life are in the power of the tongue: And they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.
1 Samuel 16:7 KJV 1900
But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.
Matthew 12:34–35 KJV 1900
O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.

The Interpretation of the Components of Salvation

Romans 10:9 KJV 1900
That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
Confess - Homologeo
compound of two separate Greek words Homo meaning Same and Logos meaning word.
To Confess with our mouth the Lord Jesus is to agree with Jesus about who he is.
Lord used here is the Same as the Old Testament Word that we talked so much about last year meaning Yahweh or Jehovah. It points to Jesus as Messiah.
Philippians 2:11 KJV 1900
And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Matthew 10:32 KJV 1900
Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven.
Believe - Pisteuo
Acts 16:31 KJV 1900
And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.

The Application of the Components of Salvation

Romans 10:10 KJV 1900
For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
Mouth-Heart, Mouth-Heart, now in verse 10 he flips and goes Heart-Mouth.
Matthew 6:21 KJV 1900
For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
Luke 12:8–9 KJV 1900
Also I say unto you, Whosoever shall confess me before men, him shall the Son of man also confess before the angels of God: But he that denieth me before men shall be denied before the angels of God.

Conclusion

The basic idea is that in order to understand things which are composed of a number of disparate elements, you must separate them into those elements and understand each of them, as well as the synergy which results from their combination.
We have examined Romans 10:9
Romans 10:9 KJV 1900
That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
We now understand that to confess with our mouths and believe in our hearts is not two separate acts, but a single act of faith with two components. Two sides of the same coin.
We always interpret a difficult to understand passage in light of an easily understood passage. John 3:16 says,
John 3:16 KJV 1900
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
Are you believing on Jesus for Everlasting life. If not trust in him today.
