The audience is Jews that are returning to Judaism.
What They Should do. (6:1-2)
Leaving, to forsake, to disregard
The elementary principles/foundation – the Old Testament teaching about the Messiah
Repentance from dead works – evil deeds
Faith toward God – we are commanded to have faith in Christ (Acts 4:12)
Doctrine of baptisms – baptismos not baptizo; refers to Jewish ceremonial washings (Titus 3:5)
Laying on of hands (Leviticus 1:4; 3:8, 13)
Resurrection of the dead (Job 19:26)
Eternal judgment (Ecclesiastes 12:14)
Go on to perfection – literally maturity
The Power to Do It (6:3)
The Advantages They Enjoyed (6:4-5)
They had been enlightened – reference to intellectual knowledge of the gospel
They had tasted the heavenly gift – they had tasted, not eaten of the salvation. (John 6:51)
They had partaken of the Holy Spirit – to partake means to associate with not to be possessed by. (Luke 5:7)
They had tasted the word of God
They had tasted the powers of the age to come – it is a reference to Jesus’ and the apostles’ miracle working power.
The Warning they Received (6:4-6)
If they fall away – to fall aside, to go astray
It is impossible – unable (Hebrews 6:18)
To renew – to restore to a more desirable state
To repentance – a change of mind that results in a change of action (2 Corinthians 7:10)

Therefore, these are not true believers but those who are deceived.
