Spiritual House Cleaning

1 Corinthians 5:6–7 NKJV

Your glorying is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump? Therefore purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened. For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us.

What is “Spiritual House Cleaning”?

Spiritual house cleaning is the step of ordering your home in a way that is consistent with your choice to make Jesus Christ Lord of your life.

Spiritual leaven is allowing things to remain in our life that will affect us negatively.

Anything that we keep or allow in our homes that is contrary to the standards and principles of God are an open door for Satan and his demonic forces to enter.

Spiritual house cleaning is getting rid of the spiritual “trash” that attracts devils and demons into our home.

Principles of Spiritual House Cleaning

Make Jesus Your Lord and Savior

Take Spiritual Inventory of Your Life

“If we get rid of rats but keep the garbage, the person is in great danger still. But if we get rid of the garbage, what we have done automatically affects the rats.” (Charles Kraft, professor at Fuller Theological Seminary)

Dedicate Your Home to the Lord (Joshua 24:15)

Pray and dedicate your home to the Lord as His house.

Invite God’s presence to dwell in your home and to use your home for His purposes.

Declare that as for you and your house, you will serve the Lord.

Declare that your home will not be a refuge for sin, darkness, and compromise, but that you and your family will be a lighthouse to a dark world.

Pray these things out loud in declaration of your faith.

Prepare for the Battle

You are taking spiritual ground and the devil will attempt to resist you.

Plead the blood of Jesus over you and your family.

Put on your spiritual armor (Ephesians 6:14-18)

Ask the Lord for His strategy for your situation. God may lead you to have other believers to come witness and participate, to help you “clean” your home as a step of accountability, to play praise and worship music as you pray, etc.

In Jesus’ name, bind any demonic manifestations from manifesting in your home during this process.

Take Spiritual Inventory of Your Home

Ask the Lord to give you spiritual discernment as you look at the things that are in your home.

Go through the house room by room allowing the Holy Spirit to show you things that need to be removed.

Do not protect valuable or sentimental objects from the scrutiny of the Lord.

Allow the Lord to show you things that are idols in your life.

Look especially for things that have demonic or false religious symbolism or wording.

Go through worldly music, videos, pictures, magazines, jewelry, games, toys, computer software, etc.

Souvenirs from other places need to be checked out. If it is an object through which Satan is operating or releasing an evil atmosphere in the home, it is NOT worth keeping or passing down to the next generation.

Remember: stop the sins of the fathers in your generation.

Cleanse Your Home of Ungodly Objects

Whatever needs to go, get rid of it. Do not sell it or give it away. Why pass on the devil’s trinkets to others?

Take what you can and burn it.

Deuteronomy 7:25 NKJV

You shall burn the carved images of their gods with fire; you shall not covet the silver or gold that is on them, nor take it for yourselves, lest you be snared by it; for it is an abomination to the Lord your God.

If the item cannot be burned, then pass it through the fire as a symbolic act and then destroy it another way.

Once you have destroyed the objects, repent and renounce any participation that you and your family have had with that object (whether knowingly or unknowingly). Ask forgiveness from the Lord.

Once you have repented and renounced your participation with an object, command any demonic forces that had access into your life through these objects to leave in the name of Jesus.

Cleanse the Atmosphere of Each Room

Go through the house and repent of any known sin that occurred in each room.

If someone else lived or occupied that room before you, then ask the Lord to show you how and what to pray.

Ask the Lord to break any curses on the home brought about by your own sin or the sins of those who have lived in the house or room before you.

Plead the blood of Jesus over every room.

Ask God to heal any trauma that occurred in the room or house. This might even be things such as nightmares, fear, etc.

Consecrate Your Home to the Lord

Walk through the house and consecrate each room to the Lord.

Release blessing over the room and those who would occupy each room and the house.

Ask the Lord to restore any blessings that the devil has stolen from you and your family because of demonic forces in your home.

Some may wish to anoint all doors and windows with oil in the name of the Lord as a visible demonstration of the atonement of the blood of Jesus and as a symbol of consecration.

Consecrate Your Property to the Lord

Follow the above procedures to rid your property of anything that the enemy might have access to and through.

Consecrate your land to the Lord. Some choose to walk the perimeter of the property while consecrating it to the Lord. Others may want to drive an anointed stake at each corner of the property while praying for the Lord’s blessing.

Take time to sing praises as a way of inviting God’s Presence.

Be creative as you allow God to show you other ways that He might show you other ways to consecrate your property.

Fill Your Home with the Glory of God

Fill the home with good things. Replace destroyed objects with objects that please the Lord. Pictures with scriptures, godly toys, etc.

Make prayer and the reading of God’s word part of your family life.

Sing praises and play praise and worship music to fill the atmosphere.

Speak the word in your home.

Keep your home filled with positive and encouraging communication in relationships.

Maintain Spiritual Victory

Guard your home from demonic intrusion. Satan will try to come back if you allow him. Keep your home clean. Do not allow compromise to set in once you have set the house in order.

Do seasonal “house cleaning” to ensure that nothing has come in. Cleanse the atmosphere of evil communications and practices that allow the spiritual climate to be defiled. Seek continual reconciliation among family members to ensure that Satan does not have a toehold to divide the members of the home. A home divided against itself cannot maintain spiritual victory. Also, God will show you other things as you mature in Him. Be sensitive to the voice of the Lord so that you may be free from the snare of demons.

Do seasonal re dedications of your home as a reminder to you and your family that as for you and your house, you will serve the Lord!
