Thinking About God

Introduction

I want to continue on the subject we started last week about the mind.

Let’s talk about the importance of thinking in our relationship to God.

Amy has often quoted a preacher from our area who said, “Christianity is a thinking man’s religion.”

He didn’t mean you have to be an academic to be a Christian.

He meant you have to give time and attention to what God says to be able to follow Him.

Let’s consider that idea together.

We Have to Read

This is the only way God has revealed Himself to us (Jd. 3).

Even the Apostles were examined by what God had revealed (Acts 17:11).

This is how we come to understand what they understood (Eph. 3:4).

“Ten minutes on your knees will do you more good than ten hours spent in reading books.”

We Have to Think

It takes time to digest what we have read (2 Tim. 2:7).

We have to think well (1 Cor. 14:20).

It involves putting ideas together and drawing conclusions (Matt. 16:1-4).

It involves thinking about the value of things (Phil. 3:8).

If you don’t work to understand, you will lose it (Matt. 13:19, 23, 13).

Some Examples

Think about why (Deuteronomy).

Think about the “therefores” (Matt. 7:7-12).

Think about paradoxes (1 Cor. 8:1; Jn. 8:32).

Conclusion

We don’t leave ourselves much time to think these days.

We fill every last second of our days with noise and activity.

This takes time and attention and it is worth it.

Stop distracting yourself from deep thoughts.

Think with me right now about what God’s word says about eternity and about facing that eternity.
