The Foundation of Jesus' Prayer (6-10) - The disciples are the chosen gift of the Father to the Son (6a,9-10) Ephesians 1:4 - 4 just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him... God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble." God chose to value us not because we are worthy but because He is merciful. Romans 9:15-16 - 15 For He says to Moses, "I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion" 16 So then it does not depend on the man who wills or the man who runs, but on God who has mercy. Jesus prayed to His Father for His disciples in order to ensure their protection and their mission to the world.
