Luke 24:13-35

INTRODUCTION

Physical Heartburn

We try to eliminate physical heartburn.

It will change the way we act

Ø       Disrupt our sleep

Ø       Disrupt our eating

Ø       Cause us to seek relief

Ø       We will do almost anything to get rid of it

Spiritual Heartburn/Holy Heartburn we need!!!

Holy Heartburn is like the Holy I Can't Help It's

It will change the way we act

FIVE KEYS TO HOLY HEART BURN

1A           We Must Recognize Jesus for who He Is (24:31)

1B.          He is the Savior

Matthew 1:21 "And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins."

2B.          He is the Lord

Matthew 7:21 "Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.

2A           We Must Walk With Jesus Daily (24:15)

Luke 9:23 Then He said to them all, "If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me..

1B           We must practice self‑surrender - "Deny himself"

2B.          We must have a single-minded obedience – "Take up his cross daily"

3B           We must develop a stubborn reliance - "Follow me"

Matthew 4:19 Then He said to them, "Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men."

Gen. Robert E. Lee's son

3A           We Must Talk with Jesus Consistently (24:17)

1B.          We are to pray to the Father

Prayer involves communication

Ø       Talking with Jesus.

Prayer requires consistency

1 Thessalonians 5:17 pray without ceasing,

Prayer builds communion

2B           We are to study the Bible

Our study should be planned

Ø       Set a time and a place.

Ø       Systematic approach

Our study time should be a priority

Ø       Personal/Private

4A.          We Must Welcome Jesus Into Our Lives (24:29)

Revelation 3:20 Behold, I stand at the door and knock.  If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.

This is an invitation to intimate fellowship with Christ

Jesus will not enter unless He is welcomed.

5A           We Must Proclaim Jesus Openly (24:33-35)

1B.          They returned to where they belonged

The Farmer and his wife riding in the car.  "I ain't moved."

2B.          They told everyone who would listen

Matthew 10:32-33 Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven. 33 "But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven..

APPLICATION

Obstacles to Holy Heartburn (24:16)

Un-confessed sin (24:13)

Ø       Sin takes us away from Jesus.

Ø       "They were leaving when they should have been laboring"

Self-centeredness (24:17b)

Ø       Pity party

Ø       "Pouting when they should have been praying"

Head knowledge without heart knowledge (24:19‑24)

Ø       They knew all the answers in their heads not in their hearts.

Ø       Carla's Conversion

More concerned about the physical than the spiritual (24:25-28)

Ø       They were more concerned about supper than the Savior.

Ø       We spend more time preparing physically than spiritually.

What is the condition of your heart?
