@LEVEL ONE = HEBREWS 2:18; 4:14‑16

@LEVEL ONE = INTRODUCTION

@ILL TITLE = MAHATMA GANDHI

@ILL TEXT = A group of Christian missionaries visited Mahatma Gandhi to discuss their work in India.  Before they left, Gandhi asked them to sing for him one of their Christian hymns.

@ILL TEXT = "Which on shall we sing?" they asked.

@ILL TEXT = "Sing the one that best expresses what you believe," he replied.

@ILL TEXT = They sang

@POEM TEXT = When I survey the wondrous cross

@POEM TEXT = On which the Prince of glory died,

@POEM TEXT = My richest gain I count but loss,

@POEM TEXT = And poor contempt on all my pride.

@LEVEL TWO = What Jesus Did

@LEVEL FOUR = Something on the cross

@LEVEL FOUR = Something to the cross ‑ transformed it from a symbol of suffering to a symbol of glory and victory.

@LEVEL FOUR = Jesus did not try to explain suffering ‑ He experienced it.

@SCRIPTURE = ISA 63:9<R>In all their distress he too was distressed, and the angel of his presence saved them. In his love and mercy he redeemed them; he lifted them up and carried them all the days of old.

@LEVEL TWO = Why He Did It

@LEVEL THREE = Show us the love of God

@SCRIPTURE = JOH 14:9<R>...Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'?

@SCRIPTURE = ROM 5:8<R>But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

@LEVEL THREE = They prepared Him to identify with our sufferings today

@SCRIPTURE = HEB 2:18, 4:14‑16

@LEVEL THREE = They teach us about what is fair

@LEVEL FOUR = Is it fair that Jesus suffered and died for my sins ‑ N0!

@LEVEL ONE = 1A. SUFFERING AND LOVE ARE NOT INCOMPATIBLE

@SCRIPTURE = 1JO 4:10<R>This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.

@ILL TITLE = DID GOD LOVE JESUS?

@ILL TEXT = Did God love Jesus while he was hanging on the cross?  Of course!  And he still loves you.

@LEVEL ONE = 2A. SUFFERING IS NOT ALWAYS PUNISHMENT FOR OUR SINS

@SCRIPTURE = 1PE 2:22<R>"He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth."

@LEVEL FOUR = We must be willing to honestly deal with sin

@LEVEL FOUR = We must understand that sometimes suffering is due to our fallen world

@LEVEL FOUR = There is something worse than suffering ‑ sin!

@LEVEL ONE = 3A. SUFFERING CAN ACCOMPLISH PURPOSES FOR OTHERS

@SCRIPTURE = 1PE 2:24<R>He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed.

@PAGE NUMBER = Page 4

@LEVEL FOUR = Joseph ‑ Save his family

@LEVEL FOUR = Moses ‑ Lead God's people

@LEVEL FOUR = David ‑ Form a righteous kingdom

@LEVEL FOUR = Jesus ‑ To save us from our sins

@LEVEL ONE = 4A. SUFFERING IN GOD'S WILL ALWAYS LEADS TO GLORY

@LEVEL FOUR = Key is to be in God's will!

@LEVEL FOUR = We must view the tree through the empty tomb!

@LEVEL ONE = 5A. CREATIVE SUFFERING DEMANDS COMPLETE SURRENDER TO GOD

@LEVEL FOUR = Surrender means we have accepted His will and are trusting His power to see us through.

@LEVEL FOUR = It doesn't mean that we give up the struggle; it means that we give up trying to struggle in our own wisdom and strength.

@ILL TITLE = THE CUP OR THE SWORD

@ILL TEXT = Two vivid symbols illustrate the difference between fighting God's will and accepting God's will: the cup in Jesus' hand and the sword in Peter's hand.

@LEVEL ONE = CONCLUSION

@LEVEL FOUR = Together the tree and the tomb say to us, "Your suffering is not in vain!"

@LEVEL TWO = What will it be for you:

@LEVEL THREE = The sword,

@LEVEL THREE = The cup?
