Psalm 14, Romans 3:9-12; 21-26

Introduction

How would you describe all men?

David does in Psalm 14.

Paul elaborates on this psalm in Romans 3.

Context of Romans 3

Ø       Chapters 1-2 deal with man’s sinfulness.

Ø       3:1-20 is a summary of Chapters 1 & 2.

Ø       3:21 is the remedy for sin.

Ø       3:9-12 summarize mankind’s sin.

3:1-8; Paul deals with the inability of the law.  Man is seen as being…

Ø       Under the guilt of sin

Ø       Under the sentence of sin.

Ø       Under the bondage of sin.

Ø       Under the burden of sin.

Ø       Under the dominion of sin.

In Romans 3:9 Paul states that our sinfulness has been proven.  Beginning in 3:10, Paul presents a series of four negative “nones” that describe mankind’s sinfulness.

1A.      Mankind’s Sin

Our sinfulness is demonstrated in…

1B.       Our spiritual failure  (3:10)

We are sinners by nature

Romans 5:12 (NKJV) 12Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned—

We have sinful motives

Jeremiah 17:9 (NKJV) 9“The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked; Who can know it?

We are sinners by practice

Isaiah 53:6 (NKJV) 6All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way; And the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.

2B.       Our intellectual failure  (3:11a)

We have head knowledge without heart knowledge.

James 2:19 (NKJV) 19You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe—and tremble!

We are nothing more than highly educated sinners.

Luke 18:16-7 (NKJV) 16But Jesus called them to Him and said, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of God. 17Assuredly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will by no means enter it.”

3B.       Our philosophical failure  (3:11b)

An unregenerate person has no desire for God.

1 Corinthians 2:14 (NKJV) 14But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

Isaiah 55:6-9 (NKJV) 6Seek the LORD while He may be found, Call upon Him while He is near.  7Let the wicked forsake his way, And the unrighteous man his thoughts; Let him return to the LORD, And He will have mercy on him; And to our God, For He will abundantly pardon.  8“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” says the LORD.  9“For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts.

4B.       Our practical failure  (3:12)

“good” = upright or righteous

Isaiah 59:7 (NKJV) 7Their feet run to evil, And they make haste to shed innocent blood; Their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity; Wasting and destruction are in their paths.

5B.       Our personal failure  (3:13-20)

We sin by our words  (3:13-14)

We sin by our ways  (3:15-18)

We are without excuse  (3:19-20)

2A.      Man’s Savior  (3:21-26)

Hebrews 4:14 (NKJV) 14Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.

1B.       Jesus Christ fulfills all righteousness  (3:21-23)

He fulfills the requirements of God’s law.  (3:21-22)

Hebrews 9:12 (NKJV) 12Not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption.

2B.       Jesus Christ provides for our righteousness.  (3:24-26)

He is our “redemption.”  (3:24)

He is our “propitiation” (to appease).  (3:25)

1 John 2:2 (NKJV) 2And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world.

He is our “justifier.”  (3:26)
