MATTHEW 4:1‑11

INTRODUCTION

This passage teaches many important truths…

Ø      The Devil after the dove!

Ø      The Reality of Satan

Ø      The Relentlessness of Satan

Ø      The Ruthlessness of Satan

But it also and most importantly emphasizes…

Ø      The deity and royalty of Christ in his ability to defeat Satan

Ø      How Christians can resist and overcome temptations.

1A.      The Devil’s Devices

1B.      Satan wants you to focus on yourself  (4:3-4)

Satan will tempt you to doubt your relationship with God.  (4:3a)

Satan will tempt you to doubt God’s Word.  (Genesis 3:1-5)

Satan will tempt you to doubt God’s love.

Satan will tempt you to doubt the Father’s provision.

2B.      Satan wants you to focus on others  (4:5-7)

Satan will tempt you to “demonstrate” God’s faithfulness.

Satan will tempt you to believe that what others think is most important.

3B.      Satan wants you to forsake God’s plan.  (4:8-10)

Satan will tempt you to focus on happiness not holiness.

Leviticus 11:45 (NASB) 45‘For I am the LORD who brought you up from the land of Egypt to be your God; thus you shall be holy, for I am holy.’”

Satan will tempt you to seek the road of least resistance.

Serving the Lord is hard work (Acts 20:35; Romans 16:6, 12; 1 Timothy 5:17)

2A.  The Devil’s Defeat  (4:10-11)

1B.      Recognize Satan for who he is

He is a Reckless Liar

John 8:44 (NASB) 44“You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him.  Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

He is a Roaring Lion

1 Peter 5:8 (NASB) 8Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.

"devour" = katapino,  to drink down, i.e. gulp entire (lit. or fig.):‑‑devour, drown, swallow (up).

Ø      He always attacks at our point of weakness.

Ø      Often he attacks when we are physically weak.

He is a Real Loser

Revelation 20:10 (NASB) 10And the devil who deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and brimstone...

2B.      Resist Satan with the Word  (1 Peter 5:6-11)

Submit To God's Reign  (1 Peter 5:6)

James 4:7 (NASB) 7Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.

Rest in God's Care  (1 Peter 5:7)

Matthew 11:28-30 (NASB) 28“Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. 29“Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30“For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

Remember God's Word

Psalm 119:11 (NASB) 11Your word I have treasured in my heart, That I may not sin against You.

Remain Faithful to Your Calling  (1 Peter 5:9)

Rely On God to Bring Victory  (1 Peter 5:10-11)

APPLICATION

A word to those who have placed their faith in Christ alone.

Ø      Satan is real

Ø      Satan is relentless and ruthless

Ø      Satan can be resisted.

A word to those who have not place their faith in Christ

Ø      Satan is a liar, a lion, and a loser

Ø      Jesus Christ is the victor and He is the only Savior.
