Sermon Background

EXODUS 16:1‑7

Ø      Jesus uses the manna from God to teach us about Himself.

1A.      HE IS SPIRITUAL BREAD (6:25‑27)

Why did the come?

1B.      They had a personal motive (6:26‑27)

They were interested in a social gospel rather than a spiritual gospel

They were motivated by their physical desires

Exodus 16:3 “The sons of Israel said to them, ‘Would that we had died by the LORD'S hand in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the pots of meat, when we ate bread to the full; for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.’”

2B.      They had a political motive (6:15)

Ø      They wanted a earthly king

Ø      But Jesus said my kingdom is not of this world.

3B.      They had an intellectual motive (6:30)

They wanted Him to do some more miracles

Ø      He is bigger than all you can cram in your head, but small enough to fit in your heart.

Ø      People can become so heavenly minded that they are no earthly good and they can also become so earthly minded that they are no heavenly good.

2A       HE IS SUPERNATURAL BREAD

Show us a sign they said like Moses showed us.  (6:30-33).

1B.      The source of the miracle (6:32)

Exodus 16:4 “Then the LORD said to Moses, ‘Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a day's portion every day, that I may test them, whether or not they will walk in My instruction.’”

Ø      Moses did not give the bread.  It was God.

2B.      The significance of the miracle (6:33)

The manna is a symbol of Christ.

Ø      The manna came from God ‑ Christ came from God

Ø      The manna laid upon the ground ‑ Christ humbled himself

Ø      The manna was round ‑ speaks of the perfection of the Lord Jesus

Ø      The manna was white ‑ spoke of the purity of the Lord Jesus

Ø      The manna was sweet ‑ spoke of the sweetness of the Lord Jesus

Ø      The manna had to be picked up and ingested ‑ Christ has to be in us.

Ø      The manna sustained them and gave life ‑ as Christ sustains us and gives us life

Ø      They could either pick that manna up or walk upon it.

3A.      HE IS SATISFYING BREAD (6:35)

1B.      Spiritual needs are greater than physical needs

2B.      Physical things can never satisfy spiritual needs

A round world can never fill a three cornered heart

3B.      Only Jesus can satisfy our spiritual needs

Psalm 34:8 “O taste and see that the LORD is good”

Fairest Lord Jesus

Beautiful Savior, Lord of all nations,
Son of God and Son of man!
Glory and honor, Praise, adoration,
Now and forevermore be thine!

4A.      HE IS SUSTAINING BREAD (6:47‑51)

1B.      Gives abundant life

John 10:10 “The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy.  I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.”

He came not to add years to your life, but life to your years.

2B.      Gives eternal life

Life is the key to the gospel of John

In Him is found eternal life.

5A.      HE IS SAVING BREAD (6:53‑58)

Jesus is speaking symbolically, like bread…

1B.      He is necessary for life.

2B.      He is suited for everyone.

3B       He is needed everyday.

4B.      He is necessary for our spiritual growth.

5B.      He must be received into our lives

John 1:12 “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name”

He is saying that you must have Him in you!

Ø      What good is bread if it is not eaten

What does it mean to receive Him?

Ø      Repent our your sins

Ø      Place your faith in Christ alone

6B.      We must feed on Him

How do you feed on Christ?  (6:63)

Ø      You feed on Him through His Word.

Ø      What bread is to your physical this Word is to your spirit.

John 5:24 “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.”

APPLICATION

Are you hungry and thirsty?

Revelation 22:17 “And the Spirit and the bride say, ‘Come!’  And let him who hears say, ‘Come!’  And let him who thirsts come. Whoever desires, let him take the water of life freely.”
