Mark 1:21-28
New International Version
21 They went to Capernaum, and when the Sabbath came, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach. 22 The people were amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law. 23 Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an impure spirit cried out, 24 “What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!”
25 “Be quiet!” said Jesus sternly. “Come out of him!” 26 The impure spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek.
27 The people were all so amazed that they asked each other, “What is this? A new teaching—and with authority! He even gives orders to impure spirits and they obey him.” 28 News about him spread quickly over the whole region of Galilee.

- Possed by a demon
Talking Point 2
- The demon twisted her
- Her voice changed
- She looked different
- Because of that demon
- She said, thought and did things that she normally would not do.
Intro - Anti-thesis (the world view)
These are contrary points that you will disprove
Talking Point 1
- If we talked to our friends, family, our spouses
- If they caught you on a bad day
- Because of something you did, said, some they might have thought even said
- There is something wrong with him/her.
- Is he possed with a demon!!?? (impure spirit) explain this
- What is wrong??!!
Talking Point 2
- Yes there are things in our lives that will twist us
- There are things that will challenge up
- There are things that have us in bondage
- Right now there is someone that is listening you feel like you are in bondage (impure spirits, mindsets, tempatations)
- Like something has you undercontrol
- The good news today, is that if you just allow Jesus to step into your situation.
- He can release your and free you from the circumstance, situations, strongholds, and DEMONS in your life that have your locked down.
Intro - Thesis
(connect back to scripture storyline)
Recap the scripture story – retell and give the overview
(Go back and read the first part of chapter 1) Jesus has been baptized by John, He has been anointed and commissioned by God (slow here) (dove of the Holy Spirit), He has called his disciples and he starts his ministry. His first stop is the Church where he has been invited. He goes there to share a word, to show His authority and when he shows up. The demons tremble and that are afraid but the “word of God” himself has entered the building.
Proposition
- What is the claim? (relevance for today)
The scripture wants us to do (what?)
We must allow the presence of Christ to dwell in our lives. We have to allow God’s word to reign in our hearts and minds.
The scripture wants us to do this by (how?)
Are we able to open our hearts and our minds to read his word and allow it to speak to our situations and circumstances?
The scripture wants us to take action towards who/what/whereby (to who?)
The passage centers around the theme of realizing that we can be set free from the situations and circumstances in our lives that have us bound.
- What is the focus? (pull from your exegesis form)
This passage centers around _________________
It is the presence and authority of Christ in our lives that allows us to be released from the strongholds of the enemy.
which is the central, controlling and unifying theme of the sermon. One word here:

***try to develop two subpoints for each point…
Point 1 - Subpoint 1- Title….
Jesus has been baptized by John, He has been anointed and commissioned by God (dove of the Holy Spirit), He has called his disciples and he starts his ministry. His first stop is the Church. He goes there to share a word,
Talking Point 1
- It was the custom in synagogue that any of the teachers could speak that were present.
- It would normally be the scribes that would speak.
- The scribes were theological experts on the rules, regulations and laws of the community who mostly spoke about the do’s and the don’ts and the always quoted what other scribes said. They had no testimony, they had nothing to show that they had a relationship with God.
Talking Point 2
- But when Jesus shows up he does not begin to talk about what other scribes have said about God. Because He is God.
- He does not begin to quote what other scribes have said.
- He does not have to do any quoting. Because they are looking and the Word that was made flesh.(quote scripture)
- There was something about the way that he spoke with confidence and knowledge of God’s word that let everyone know something was different.
- He spoke about relationship with God instead of a strict listing of man-made rules.
- When we start to read God’s work
Romans 8:38-39
For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Psalm 27:12
The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
Isaiah 40:31
But they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.
Something about God’s word it resonates we it encourages us and lifts us. We know the author when we hear the words

- We were asked by the professor at college to share from our reading. On student began to talk about the subject but not about the book. He sounded good. The professor said. You sound good and you are talking about the subject, but you did no reading. I know because of you would have taken the time to look on the front and the back of the book. You would have seen that I am the author my name is at the beginning and the end of the book.

Matthew 4:4
But He answered and said, "It is written, "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.""

Point 2 - Subpoint 1- Title….
Talking Point 1
- Let’s look at this situation closer. That person had been at church, time after time after time, after time.
- That demon had been with him each time.
- At choir practice with that demon, council meeting demon, He was in worship.
Talking Point 2
- We must be careful as we spend years and years hearing, talking and learning about Jesus but never had a Jesus experience.
- BUT then Jesus shows up and the only person that speaks up is the demon.
- The scribes to call Him, Holy one the man, nobody
- The demon does (why, explain the demons that were cast out of heaven)
- Have you allowed Jesus to show up in your personal lives, your relationships, your finances, your marriage on your job.

Hebrews 4:12
For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
Point 2 - Subpoint 2- Title….
Talking Point 1
- When we begin to have an encounter by reading God’s word, understanding God’s word and living it out in our lives. Those demons that have us bound will have to choice but to depart from our lives.
Transition from Point 2 to Point 3
***Good Transition here tie everything together**
1. We can be released by power and authority in His word
2. We can be released by recognizing ‘who’ Jesus is
3. We can be released by allowing God’s word to work in our lives

Point 3 - Subpoint 1- Title….
Talking Point 1
- Jesus commands the demon to come out.
- Records show that there was witch craft and lots of demons in this ancient society.
- Many had come before Christ and tried to cast out demons but were unsuccessful.
- But when Jesus speaks, the demons will run, the winds and the waves will obey his will.
- The man only experiences discomfort when Jesus begins to speak.
- We want to do good and evil is always present.
- The Christ the word of God brings us healing and freedom.
- Each Sunday We pray that we not only be hearers of God’s word but doers of God’s work.
- When God’s word begins to move in our life there may be some discomfort. There may be some pain. But the discomfort is
- Every time you pick up God’s word. It says to your stronghold’s get out.
- Every time you pick up God’s word. It says to your ego get out.
- Every time you pick up God’s word. It says to racism get out.
Despair, Mental Illness,
- God’s word will say “alcoholism” get out, drug abuse, get out, backbiting, Get out, Lying Get out.
- God’s word will say “alcoholism” get out, drug abuse, get out, backbiting,
- Jesus shows up and things begin to change.
Talking Point 2
- Jesus has shown up to free us from the strongholds and things that are holding us down.
- We just have to know he is the key to freedom from the things that have use.
