Series for 2021 - Jesus is In!
“He Is” goes through the books of the Bible highlighting things about Jesus, the Messiah
“He's Moses' voice”
Messiah would be worshipped by angels (Deut 32:43, Luke 2:13-14)
Personified in the cities of refuge (Deut 4:41)
He is the Prophet like unto Moses
In our scripture reading today - Messiah will be a prophet (Deut 18:15-19, John 6:14)
Please stand as we honor the reading of God’s Word
Deuteronomy 18:14–22 NIV
14 The nations you will dispossess listen to those who practice sorcery or divination. But as for you, the Lord your God has not permitted you to do so. 15 The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your fellow Israelites. You must listen to him. 16 For this is what you asked of the Lord your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly when you said, “Let us not hear the voice of the Lord our God nor see this great fire anymore, or we will die.” 17 The Lord said to me: “What they say is good. 18 I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their fellow Israelites, and I will put my words in his mouth. He will tell them everything I command him. 19 I myself will call to account anyone who does not listen to my words that the prophet speaks in my name. 20 But a prophet who presumes to speak in my name anything I have not commanded, or a prophet who speaks in the name of other gods, is to be put to death.” 21 You may say to yourselves, “How can we know when a message has not been spoken by the Lord?” 22 If what a prophet proclaims in the name of the Lord does not take place or come true, that is a message the Lord has not spoken. That prophet has spoken presumptuously, so do not be alarmed.
THE WORD of GOD, for THE PEOPLE of GOD

Prophet - the Position

Prophet - the Position
Different than royalty, judges, and priests - another class of public authority - the prophet
Prophets like Samuel, Elijah, and Elisha. Major and minor prophet sections of the Old Testament.
1 - From the Israelites - faithful to God’s law
2 - Like Moses - God’s own instructions
3 - Authority - He speaks - You listen!
To listen to the words of God implies obedience. If we don’t obey then we really haven’t listened.
God will speak through this prophetical order throughout Israel’s history
Moses - set the standard

Moses - the Model

Moses - the Model
David might have been the greatest Jewish King, but Moses was the greatest Jewish Prophet
The Lawgiver
Directly spoke with God
No visions or dreams
In our scripture - the promise of a Prophet like Moses
Many prophets throughout history since Moses
Immediately after Moses - Joshua
The Jewish people recognized that ultimately the Prophet would be the Messiah himself
JESUS

Jesus - the Fulfillment

Jesus - the Fulfillment
Moses & Jesus were both:
“fellow Israelites.”
‘Shepherds’
‘saviours’ of their people
born at a time when evil kings pronounced death to all Jewish baby boys in the area.
gave up royal positions to save their people.
performed miracles
In the gospel of John - some asked John the Baptist if he was Elijah? No. The Prophet? No. “He is coming!” referring to Jesus Christ.
Peter and Stephen quoted verse 15 when they share with folks in the book of Acts in chapter 3 and 7 respectively.
Jesus is Prophet, Priest, and King!
As the Prophet in our scripture today:
Jesus - raised up by God
Jesus - spoke directly with God the Father
Jesus - His words are important for us to hear and respond - to listen!
