2 Samuel 9:1‑13

INTRODUCTION

The Importance of the Blood Covenant (1 Samuel 18:1‑4)

The Meaning of Covenant

Ø      "Beret" means "to cut" can be translated Blood Covenant.

Ø      Irrevocable, irreversible, contract based on blood.

The Method of the Blood Covenant

Ø      Incision ‑ Right hands = Sharing of Personhood

Ø      Garments given = Sharing of Possessions

Ø      Weapons and armor = Sharing of Protection

The Manifestation of the Blood Covenant

Ø      Closer to each other than their own family.

Ø      David was a hero – At first Saul was proud of David then he began to envy him.

Ø      Saul set his heart on killing David.

Ø      Jonathan protects ‑ later is slain.

Ø      David becomes King ‑ Blood purge

Implications of the Blood Covenant (2 Samuel 9:1‑3)

Ø      The Blood Covenant extended to their children.

Ø      "Kindness" is covenant language, means mercy.

Ø      David's kindness is based on his covenant with Jonathan.

1A.      Jonathan Represents the Lord Jesus

The Savior who made the blood covenant for us.

1B.      The Covenant was announced at the Last Supper.

Luke 22:20 “And in the same way He took the cup after they had eaten, saying, "This cup which is poured out for you is the new covenant in My blood.”

2B.      The Covenant was accomplished on the Cross.

Romans 5:9 “Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him.”

Ø      Jesus cut a Blood Covenant with God

Acts 20:28 “Be on guard for yourselves and for all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood.”

2A.      Mephibosheth Represents the Sinner

1B.      He was deformed.

He was crippled by a fall.  (9:3)

Ø      Injured when his nurse fell on him.

2 Samuel 4:4 “Now Jonathan, Saul's son, had a son crippled in his feet. He was five years old when the report of Saul and Jonathan came from Jezreel, and his nurse took him up and fled.  And it happened that in her hurry to flee, he fell and became lame.  And his name was Mephibosheth.”

Ø      So were we

Romans 5:12 “Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned”

He could not come he had to be brought. (9:5)

Ø      The Paralytic and His Friends (Mark 2:1‑12)

He would not come he had to be sought.

Ø      Paul ‑ Damascus Road  (Acts 9)

2B.      He was dethroned.

He had lost his place.  (9:4)

Ø      Taken to Lo-debar = "no pasture"

He had lost his position.

Ø      Meant to be a prince, grandson of a King.

Ø      Lived in total poverty in hiding.

Illustration:  The little boy who lost his birth certificate.

3B.      He was dead.  (9:8)

Ø      Dead dog the sentence of death was on him he was in the wrong kingdom.

Ephesians 2:1 “And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience.  Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest.”

4B.      He was deceived.

About whom David was.

Ø      Told daily David is your enemy.

Ø      All this time he was in Lo-debar fearing and hating David and David was his best friend.

About what David wanted.

Ø       Running from David, fearing David, he thought David wanted to destroy him

We are deceived about God.

Ø      Who God is – He is both loving and just.

Ø      What God wants

John 3:17 “For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him.”

Ø      God has to catch us to save us.

Ø      Had he not sought us we would not been saved.

3A.      David Represents the Father.  (9:1)

1 Peter 3:18 “For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit”

Because of Christ we receive…

1B.      The King's forgiveness (9:7a)

1 John 2:12 “I am writing to you, little children, because your sins have been forgiven you for His name's sake.”

Ephesians 4:32 “Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you.”

2B.      The King's fellowship (9:7b, 10, 13)

Revelation 3:20 “Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and will dine with him, and he with Me.”

3B.      The King's fortune (9:9)

Sinned has left us bankrupt.  (Matthew 5:3)

Matthew 5:3 "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Through Jesus became co ‑ heirs with Him

Romans 8:17 “…and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him.

4B.      The King's family (9:11)

Notice the change that being a son of the King brought.

Ø      He went from be excluded to being included.

Ø      He went from poverty to plenty.

Ø      He went from cursing to being blessing.

Ø      He went from death to life.

APPLICATION

Notice the motive of the King

Ø      David passes the food and he sees the scare on his wrist, the mark of the covenant.

Ø      "I don't deserve it, but I can't deny it, so I am going to enjoy it"

1 John 3:1 “See how great a love the Father has bestowed on us, that we would be called children of God; and such we are…”

Ø      Nothing you can do to make him love you any more and there is nothing you can to do to make him love you any less.

Ø      He doesn't love you because you are valuable, You are valuable because He loves you.

Ø      He does not change you so He can love you, He loves you so He can change you.

We need to realize that because of the Blood Covenant of Jesus, we have:

Ø      His Person ‑  his blood

Ø      His Possessions ‑ His robe of righteousness

Ø      His Protection ‑ all the artillery of heaven is aimed at the enemy.

Points to Ponder

Ø      What does knowing the nature and depth of Christ’s covenant mean to you?

Ø      How should knowing this impact your life today?

Ø      How can you begin to demonstrate this type of Christ love to others?
