Ever Felt Trapped - Imprisoned

Life has a way of taking us captive.

Hannah’s Head in the Stair Rails

Scriptural Background

Key phrases

“free from sin” -( 6:7, 18, 22)

”don’t you know” - (6:3, 16: 7:1) used to introduce doctrinal points

“in  (through) Christ Jesus” - (6:11, 23; 7:25)

1A.      THE REALITY OF OUR FREEDOM

1B.      The Truth Of It (vv.1-2)

We are dead to sin’s pull

We are dead to sin’s prompting

2B.      The Triumph Of It

1C.      Pictured by our baptism into Christ (vv. 3-4)

Baptizo - to immerse/to be introduced into vital union with Jesus Christ. A radical change of state!

Takes place at conversion - pictured in immersion.

2C.      Produced by unity with Christ (v.5)

Unity - planted = grafted into

We come to share His very life!

2A.      THE REASON FOR OUR FREEDOM

1B.      God Has Broken Sin’s Stronghold (v.6a)

“old self” = the corrupt nature

(Ephesians 4:22)  "You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires;"

(Colossians 3:9)  "Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;"

Positionally in God’s eyes “the old self” is dead

Practically we “put off” the “old self”

At Calvary God dealt with both sin and self by putting us to death with Christ.

2B.      God Has Broken Sin’s Stranglehold

(vv.6b-7)

Therefore we should....

Focus on the fact (v.7b)

Beware of feelings

It Doesn’t Feel Like Six O’Clock

It does not matter what time it feels like.

3A.      THE RESULTS OF OUR FREEDOM

1B.      We Can Appreciate The Victory Of Christ (vv. 8-10)

1C.      The significance of His death and resurrection

We are identified with Him in both!

2C.      The magnificence of His death and resurrection

“death no longer has mastery over him”

He is no longer in the cradle or on the cross.  But now he wears a crown!

2B.       We Can Appropriate The Victory Of Christ (vv.11)

“count”/“reckon” = accounting term ‘to take into account’

At Calvary the full price was paid.

All that is left is for us to count is as so.
