BREAKING SIN'S HOLD

Romans 6:12-23

INTRODUCTION

Sin Is...

devastating, debilitating, degenerating

Defiling and polluting to the soul.

Rebellious, ignoring and even trampling on God's Word.

Ungrateful, refusing to acknowledge God as the source of every good thing.

Incurable by man's efforts and power.

Overpowering

Brings satanic control.

Damns the unredeemed soul to hell.

Sin is...

Present in all.

Prince of all.

We are all willing participants in sin!

Paul sets forth here...

How we can once and for all Break the Hold Sin has on our lives!

Two Steps!

                                                                                     Page 2

1A.       SUBMIT TO A NEW KING

Act of the will - A Choice...

1B.       Choose Not To...

1C.       Serve sin (v.12)

1 Pet 2:11  Dear friends, I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world, to abstain from sinful desires, which war against your soul.

2C.      Submit to sin (v.13a)

The body is the only access sin has to the believer's life

1 Cor 9:25-27

2B.      Choose To...

1C.      Submit to God (13b)

(James 4:7 NIV)  Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

(Rom 12:1 NIV)  Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God--this is your spiritual act of worship.

2C.      Serve God (v.14)

John 8:34, 36  Jesus replied, "I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin...  So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

(Phil 2:12-13 NIV)  Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed--not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence--continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling..., for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose.

2A.       SERVE A NEW MASTER

1B.       A New Perspective (vv. 15-16)

1C.       About sin and grace (v.15)

The purpose of grace is to free us from sin not to sin.

2C.       About service and God (v.16)

"offer yourselves" - willing choice of obedience

All slaves are bound to total obedience

We are all slaves!

(1 John 3:10 NIV) This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not a child of God; nor is anyone who does not love his brother.

2B.       A New Position (vv.17-18)

1C.       What you were

"used to be slaves to sin"

2C.       What you did

"you wholeheartedly obeyed"

Trusting heart

Faithful life

3C.       What you became

"form" - to be cast or poured into

"entrust" - to deliver over to

God made you a new creation

A living model of  His Word

3B.       A New Practice (v. 19)

1C.       No longer controlled by our sin nature

Begins with "impurity" - inward sin

Leads to "wickedness" - outward sin

2C.       Now committed to righteousness

Which leads to "holiness"

4B.       A New Promise (vv. 20-22)

1C.       The old way promised ruin (vv. 20-21)

"ashamed" - brings shame

"death" - Hell

2C.       The new way promises rewards (v.22)

Freedom from sin's control

Holiness as a result of God's control

Eternal Life!

5B.       A New Plan (v.23)
