THE SPIRITUAL MAN

Romans 7:1-6

INTRODUCTION

Three Types of Men

Natural Man

Unsaved; can rise no higher than his intellectual, moral or volitional powers can lift him. He is ruled by his senses.

Carnal Man

Is saved; still dominated a least partially by the power of sin and under the control of the old nature.

Spiritual Man

Is the believer whose life is controlled by the HS.

These are the three men in view in Chapter 7

First we will look at the Spiritual Man...

1A.       THE AXIOM (v.1)

The Law Is Binding

The Law Is Limited

2A.       THE ANALOGY (vv.2-3)

A Binding Relationship (v.2a)

The Breaking Of The Relationship (v.2b)

The Basis For A New Relationship (v.3)

3A.       THE APPLICATION (vv. 4-5)

1B.       Our Position

1C.       In relation to the law (v.4a)

"died to the law" = "were made dead"

Aorist - Completed, finality

Passive - Made to die by God

2C.       In relation to the Lord (v.4b)

"through the body..." = Christ's sub.

"might belong to..." = new relationship

Total Change

(2 Corinthians 5:21)  God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

2B.       Our Purpose (v.4c)

"that we might bear fruit..."

The transformed life will bear fruit

(Ephesians 2:10)  For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

1C.       The fruit of a godly attitude

(Galatians 5:22-23)  But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, {23} gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

2C.       The fruit of godly actions

(John 15:12)  My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.

(Hebrews 13:15)  Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise--the fruit of lips that confess his name.

(Philippians 1:11)  filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ--to the glory and praise of God.

3B.       Our Past (v.5)

Four things that characterized our old lives...

1C.       Controlled by our sinful natures

2C.       Compelled by our sinful passions

3C.       Condemned by our sinful deeds

4A.       THE AFFIRMATION (v.6)

1B.       We Are Free From The Law

(Galatians 3:13)  Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: "Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree."

2B.       We Are Free To Serve

1C.       A new master

"serve" = the service of the bondslave, whose sole purpose is to obey the will of his master.

2C.       A new method

The work of the HS is to lead us to serve God!

APPLICATION

                          I do not work my soul to save;

                              That work my hath done.

But I will work like any slave

For love of God's dear Son.
