LIFE ON THE ROCK

MAKING YOUR LIFE COUNT

Matthew 6:19-24

INTRODUCTION

We are living in a plastic and phony world - we have all been gypped.

In the spiritual realm we need to be sure we get the real thing.

All of us want to leave something that will be lasting and significant.

Three Principles

                                                                                      Page 2

1A.       YOU MUST INVEST IN ETERNITY (19-21)

Four Facts

1B.       Wealth Cannot Bring Satisfaction

(Ecclesiastes 5:10)  Whoever loves money never has money enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with his income....

A man of modest income has more than a rich man because he has all he wants and the rich man does not.

(Proverbs 15:6)  ... the income of the wicked brings them trouble.

(Proverbs 23:4)  Do not wear yourself out to get rich; have the wisdom to show restraint.

Wealth is Fleeting

Talking Frog

I am a Texas oil man, kiss me. She didn’t she would rather have a talking frog than a Texas oil man.

2B.       Wealth Cannot Buy Salvation

(Proverbs 11:4)  Wealth is worthless in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from death.

Rich Man (Luke 16)

Charlie Dobson - Garbage

He would wrap his garbage like a gift and people would pick it up.

Satan does this in life and we end up not with treasure but with trash.

3B.       Wealth Can Be Sanctified (20)

(1 Timothy 6:17‑19)  Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. {18} Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. {19} In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.

What does Christ mean?

Literally “stop treasuring treasure!”

He is saying make sure your treasure is the real thing!

Add up everything money can’t buy and death can’t take away and you will find out how wealthy you are!

4B.       Wealth Can Be Secured

(1 Peter 1:4) ...an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade‑‑kept in heaven for you,

“No man is a fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.” Jim Elliot

How Can You Have Treasure In Heaven?

Invest in things that are going to heaven...

You don’t take it with you, you send it ahead.

Your heart will decide

If you want to know where you are investing your life look at you bank statement.

2A.       YOU MUST BECOME CHRIST-CENTERED (22-23)

“good” = singleness or purpose

1B.       The Single Eye

Healthy and focused on the Lord!

Everything centers on Jesus!

(Philippians 3:13)  ... But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead,

Cello Player

Never moved his fingers - why? They are looking for it and I found it.

You can go deeper in Jesus but never beyond Jesus!

We must give everything to him!

This is difficult! - You know you have gotten there when you are full of light!

2B.       The Sinful Eye

“bad” = sinful

Eye with double vision

(James 1:8)  he is a double‑minded man, unstable in all he does.

(Judges 17:6)  In those days Israel had no king; everyone did as he saw fit.

Tragedy is when people do wrong but think it is right.

3A.       YOU MUST POSSESS YOUR POSSESSIONS  (24)

Money = mammon, possessions

1B.       The impossibility of serving two masters

Not jobs (ie employers)

“Kurios” = Lord - slave owner, a slave can be owned by only one master!!!

2B.       The importance of serving the right master

He does not want a place in your life

He does not want prominence in you life

He demands preeminence in your life!

No rival, no refusal, no rebuttal!

No freedom without absolute slavery to Christ!

APPLICATION

Does Your Life Count?

Are you investing in eternity?

Is your life Christ-centered?

Do you possess your possession or do they possess you?
