3 Movements:
Red Sea to Wilderness of Shur to Elim (Exod 15:22-27)
This is like a microcosm of the whole Journey
Grumbling — Bitterness
Moses Prays / Asks
God provides
God’s Promise of blessing if obedience
God Provides more (Elim)
Elim to Wilderness of Sin (Exod 16:1-36)
Quail & Manna — The Testing of This Blessing (Exod 16:4)
Grumbling — Bitterness
Longing for Egypt (Longing for Sin) (Exod 16:3)
God promises meat & bread — shows his glory
God Gives Quail (meat from heaven — Incarnation) (Exo 16:13)
God gives Bread w/ Instruction (Jesus is the bread — Follow Him, “This is my beloved Son)
Miraculous Provision (moldy after a day, none on sabbath)
The Importance of Rest — God provides
The People fail the test — the test to trust God
Wilderness of Sin to Rephidim (Exod 17:1-7)
Why are you testing the Lord (Exod 17:2) — Is not the Lord among us? (Exod 17:7)
Serious doubt — why did you bring us out to kill us? (Exod 17:3)
Moses takes only the Elders (leaders)
The staff — representing God’s Power and Presence
Main Points:
Pathway: God has us on a journey — a progression towards something.
Presence: God is with us on that journey (Exo 16:10, Exod 3:12) (God hears them)
Provision: God provides for our needs physical (Tree/Meat/Bread/Water)/spiritual(Cross/Incarnation/Union/Spirit Indwelling )
OR
God’s presence is displayed in his plan and in his provision for his people.
Themes:
that they will Know the Lord (Exo 16:6, 16:12)
Fulfillment (Exod 3:1, 17:6)
Obedience of Faith (trust) in the Lord (Exod 15:26) means testing (Exod 16:4)
Intro:
Do you have doubt God’s presence in your life?
Is he really there? Is he really listening?
Emotion: When have you felt most alone in your life?
Is God really with us?
Answer: Yes he is, let me show you how:
Water made sweet, bread from heaven, water from the rock.
