THE MAKING OF A GODLY MOTHER

1 Samuel 1:24-28

INTRODUCTION

Being a Mother is one of the most difficult jobs in the world...

The mother of three notorious kids was asked, "If you had it to do all over again would you have children?"

"Sure," she said, "but not the same ones."

"The joy of motherhood is what a woman experiences when all the children have gone to bed."

"There is nothing easy about good mothering.  It can be backbreaking, heart wrenching, and anxiety producing.  And that's just the morning."

A "good" mom ‑ *Never bakes biscuits from a little cardboard tube that goes "pow!"  *Appears instantly whenever any family member yells, "Mom!"  *Knows exactly which garment each child wants to wear everyday and has it washed and hung in the closet.  *Is always home when you call.  *Uses coupons to save at least $15 every time she buys groceries.

*Never raises her voice.  *Never dreads teacher conferences.  *Attends every T‑ball and soccer game in hose and heels after a productive day at the office or some other world expanding venture.  *Never leaves kids with a runny nose in the church nursery.  *Never says, "No" to the PTA.  *Keeps a regimented family schedule of daily tooth flossing and Bible memorization.

(Focus on the Family, May 1988, p. 3)

Hannah models for us a godly mother...

THE PATIENT ENDURANCE OF A GODLY MOTHER

Reflected By Her Walk (4-8)

She walked obediently

She did what God had instructed

She walked humbly

She did not become bitter toward Penninah

She walked faithfully

Faithful to her husband

Faithful to her Lord

Revealed In Her Worship

She was consistent - “Whenever”

She refused to allow circumstances to control her.

She was compassionate - “she wept...”

She continued!

THE PRAYERFUL INFLUENCE OF THIS GODLY MOTHER

Her Petition of The Father (10-16)

It was silent (12-14)

Sometimes the loudest things we say are not spoken!

It was simple (11)

“Look upon your servant’s misery” = plea for mercy

“Remember me...” = plea for grace

“Give her a son..” = plea for blessing

It was sincere (10)

“Bitterness...wept...prayed...” = heaviness of heart, broken hearted, broken before God!

Her Promise to The Father (11)

Complete sacrifice

Gave her first born

Gave him for all his life

Complete surrender

Nazarite vow...

No fruit of vine, morning the dead, haircut!

Her Praise of The Father (2:1-9)

Gave God the glory!!!

THE PURPOSEFUL ACTIONS OF THE GODLY MOTHER

She Kept Her Word (21-28)

To God’s People

Specifically to Eli

To God

To her son

Samuel = asked of the Lord

~3 years old

She Kept Her Watch (2:18-21)

She provided for her son (18-19)

She presented her sacrifice (19b)

She persisted in her service (20-21)

APPLICATION

What Kind of Mother Are You?

You see, every mother must decide what kind of mother she will be.  Will she be a "MEDIA MOM", a "SOCIETY MOM", or a "BIBLICAL MOM".

Ladies, if you allow the media to dictate your standards of motherhood you will fail and fail miserably.  By the same token if you allow society or others around you, to dictate your standards, you will likewise fail.

But if you allow the Word of God to dictate your standards and you apply those standards your life, you will be a success.
