15. Our identity in Christ isn’t achieved but recieved.
Laws of Identification:
1: The Law of Revelation Knowledge
Sense knowledge contacts the physical, but revelation knowledge shows you what God sees.
A) Life is all about perspective. God sees one thing and man sees another.
1) I might see a junk pile on the side of the road. And another person drives by and sees a treasure. “one mans junk is another man’s treasure”
Before we got married I helped clean out my wife’s house to get it ready to sell. I got rid of a lot of stuff when my wife wasn’t there. Maybe not the best way to go about things. I saw what looked like a very outdated laptop. I thought no need to hold on to this. Chucked it in the trash until my wife began to look for it.
2) “What is the difference between an obstacle and an opportunity? Our attitude toward it. Every opportunity has a difficulty, and every difficulty has an opportunity.”
(16) To see what God see’s we need revelation knowledge of the Word.
When you see it in the Word, you can say, “I am who God says I am”
B) Lets find ourselves in the Word of God.
1) Jesus did in Luke 4:17-20
Luke 4:17–20 NASB95
17 And the book of the prophet Isaiah was handed to Him. And He opened the book and found the place where it was written, 18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim release to the captives, And recovery of sight to the blind, To set free those who are oppressed, 19 To proclaim the favorable year of the Lord.” 20 And He closed the book, gave it back to the attendant and sat down; and the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on Him.
We know that Jesus was not born quoting scripture. The bible says in Luke 2:52
Luke 2:52 NASB95
52 And Jesus kept increasing in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.
Jesus studied the scripture and found the places which referred to Him. For example He found Himself in Isaiah 61:1-3
Isaiah 61:1–3 NASB95
1 The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, Because the Lord has anointed me To bring good news to the afflicted; He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to captives And freedom to prisoners; 2 To proclaim the favorable year of the Lord And the day of vengeance of our God; To comfort all who mourn, 3 To grant those who mourn in Zion, Giving them a garland instead of ashes, The oil of gladness instead of mourning, The mantle of praise instead of a spirit of fainting. So they will be called oaks of righteousness, The planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified.
He grew in revelation knowledge of the Father and who He is as the Anointed One.
Even though that scripture was written 700 years before Christ, Jesus said:
That is Me,
That is who I am
That is what I have
Today this scripture is fulfilled.
(17) We must find ourselves in the Word of God.
(18) The Bible is God talking to us.
2. John the baptist must have done something similar in Luke 3:4
Luke 3:4 NASB95
4 as it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make ready the way of the Lord, Make His paths straight.
When he read that scripture he must have said to himself “I am that voice”
His true identity was in the Word of God.
3. Paul found his identity in the Word of God.
Philippians 3:8:9
Philippians 3:8–9 NASB95
8 More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them but rubbish so that I may gain Christ, 9 and may be found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own derived from the Law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which comes from God on the basis of faith,
(19) If you lost your true identity or destiny, it can be found in Him.
Colossians 2:3
Colossians 2:3 NASB95
3 in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
Colossians 2:9-10
Colossians 2:9–10 NASB95
9 For in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form, 10 and in Him you have been made complete, and He is the head over all rule and authority;
1) This is through a relationship with Jesus.
(20) When you see who He is , He will tell you who you are.
The words leap off the pages of the Bible right into your heart.
Apostle Peter had a experience like this in Matthew 16:16-17
Matthew 16:16–17 NASB95
16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” 17 And Jesus said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Barjona, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven.
2) After Peter had a revelation of Jesus, Peter recieved revelation of who he was in Christ in Matthew 16:18
Matthew 16:18 NASB95
18 “I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it.
We see that Peter’s identity was challenged when he denied Jesus. Bible says that in Luke 22:31-34
Luke 22:31–34 NASB95
31 “Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has demanded permission to sift you like wheat; 32 but I have prayed for you, that your faith may not fail; and you, when once you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.” 33 But he said to Him, “Lord, with You I am ready to go both to prison and to death!” 34 And He said, “I say to you, Peter, the rooster will not crow today until you have denied three times that you know Me.”
(21) God’s revelation for you will always be challenged.
(22) The Word of God will bring you through every challenge to victory.
We see Peter’s identity coming to pass in the Book of Acts.
The devil will challenge your identity in Christ. This is what happened to Jesus in Matthew 4:3
Matthew 4:3 NASB95
3 And the tempter came and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.”
Matthew 4:6
Matthew 4:6 NASB95
6 and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down; for it is written, He will command His angels concerning You’; and On their hands they will bear You up, So that You will not strike Your foot against a stone.’ ”
This was right after Matthew 3:16-17 where Jesus heard the Father say He was His Son.
Matthew 3:16–17 NASB95
16 After being baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove and lighting on Him, 17 and behold, a voice out of the heavens said, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased.”
Mark 4 - The devil comes to steal the Word right after it was sown.
