THE BIBLE : GOD'S HOLY WORD

2 Timothy 3:14 - 4:2,5 -7,13

INTRODUCTION:

Paul sets before us the Bible's doctrine on itself.

He calls it the Holy Scripture =  ta hera gramata

Scripture = usually grapha here gramata   refers to the words and the document.

Holy =  Normal word for holy is hagios - Used only one other time in NT

1 Cor. 9:13 = holy  things of the TempleMeans sacred pertains to God.

Paul sounds like a Baptist -

Baptist, Presb., and Pentecostal discuss what denomination Paul would join - Baptist "I don't think he'd change"

Historically we as Baptist have loved and held in deepest respect the Bible.

VBS we pledge to the Bible.

Baptist are a Bible Believing People!!!!

1A.       THE INTENTION OF THE BIBLE  (v.14)

1B.       Continuation  (v.14a)

-"continue..." = Consistent walk -> maturity

2B.       Conviction  (v.14b)

-"convinced..." = Firm assured foundation.

3B.       Conversion  (v.15)

This is the intention of the Bible to bring men to Christ.

-Lois (mother) and Eunice (grandmother) prepared  him.

-From his mother's knee to his Master's knee.

-Deacon came home after services said not much happen - Lois' boy was saved.  Not much look at what happened...

THIS IS THE INTENTION OF THE BIBLE!!!!

It shows us the greatness of our sin.

It shares the greatness of our Savior

Jesus is the theme of the Bible

OT predicts - NT presents

OT anticipates - NT announces

If you want to know about:

The stars read astronomy.

The Bright and Morning Star read the Bible.

The ages of the rocks read Geology.

The Rock of the Ages read the Bible.

The roses and lilies read Botany.

The Rose of Sharon and the Lily of the Valley read the Bible.

NO OTHER BOOK CAN DO WHAT THE BIBLE DOES:

Never hear of anyone reading:

A math book and stopping lying.

A chemistry book and stop drinking.

A geometry book and became pure.

But the Bible will:

Make liars truthful.

Make drunkards sober.

Make harlots pure.

THE INTENTION OF THE BIBLE IS TO LEAD A MAN TO CHRIST.

THEREFORE WE SHOULD GET UPSET WHEN:

-There is any hint of suspicion about the integrity of the Bible.

-There is any undermining of it's authority.

-There and questioning of it's accuracy or any   denying of it's reliability.

2A.       THE INSPIRATION OF THE BIBLE

1B.       “God-Breathed” : Supernatural Inspiration  (v.16)

It is a living Book

(Hebrews 4:12)  For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double‑edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.

Supernatural Inspiration does not eliminate the use of human writers.  However, each writer is so superintended by God as to produce exactly what God wanted.

Duel authorship emphasis on God.

(2 Peter 1:21)  For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

If not you emphasis man - they say that man is errant.  However, if God can overcome man's tendency to err at one point He can at every point.

When the Bible speaks on a science it does so accurately

If not History how Eternity?

If not Creation how Salvation?

(John 3:12)  I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things?

2B.  “Scripture” : Verbal Inspiration  (v.16)

This means that the Words are inspired.

Some say the thoughts but not the Word.

How can you think a thought without words.

3B.  “All” : Total (Plenary) Inspiration (v.16)

Pasa = Every single part of the whole.

3A.       IMPLICATIONS OF THE BIBLE

1B.       We have something to Say  (4:2)

"Preach the Word" = Don't proclaim it if you don't believe it.

2B.       We have something that Saves (4:5)

What we believe about the Bible is critical to our evangelism.

Soulwinning without a inerrant Bible.

-No certainty about origin (Romans).

-No Fall; No Garden; No Adam and Eve.

-No atoning sacrifice.

-No witness.

3B.       We have something that Soothes (4:7)

What does a man want when he faces death.  (v.13)

1.  “Cloak” = warmth for the body.

2.  “Scrolls” = stimulating  for his mind.

3.  “Especially the Parchments” = The Word of God.

The Bible will never fail those who face death.

It will always bring comfort!!!

Young preacher no light -

Farmer lighted pine branches-"It will see you home"

"What if the winds blow?"

"What if the rain put it out?"

"What if it burns out?"

Bible is a lamp unto your feet and a light unto your path.

Winds of disbelief Storms of skepticism

Hold on it will see you Home.

APPLICATION

What are you trusting to get you home ?

Are you standing on the Word and living the Word.

Have you doubted God's Word in any area of your life?
