Genesis 2:18-25

Introduction

William Bennett: Leading Cultural Indicators, Since 1960…

Ø      560% increase in violent crime

Ø      >400% increase in illegitimate births

Ø      Divorces have quadrupled

Ø      Three times as many children live in a single family home

Ø      >200% increase in the teenage suicide rate

The First Family

Ø      They had a head start Eve could not compare Adam to the other men.  Adam could not compare her cooking to Mom’s

The Foundations of a Happy Home are found in the Reasons for Marriage…

1A.      Companionship - “it is not good for man to be alone”

1B.      We all need companionship

Sometimes, it is good to be alone but not all the time.

2B.      We all need someone with whom we can share our lives.

A burden shared is halved

A joy shared is doubled.

3B.      We must set aside time for each other.

When was the last time you took your wife on a date?

2A.      Cooperation – “A Helper”

1B.      We are to work together

We must be willing to share the load!

2B.      We are to cultivate each other’s potential

We must work to make our mates all they can be.

3B.      We are to encourage one another.

1 Thessalonians 5:11 (NASB) Therefore encourage one another and build up one another, just as you also are doing.

3A.      Completion – “Suitable for Him”

1B.      God made Adam from the dust - Eve from his side, why?

Therefore when they came together that which is missing in Adam is brought back

She was to complete him not compete with him.

2B.      Men and women are different on purpose and for a purpose

“He made us different to make us one.”  A. Rogers

The man (2:15-16)

Ø      Is to be the provider

Ø      Is to be the protector

Ø      Is to be the leader

Ø      Is to be the warrior

Ø      Is goal oriented, his work is an extension of himself

Ø      Is analytical, wants to figure everything out

The woman (3:20)

Ø      Is the nurturer

Ø      Is the nester - her home is an extension of herself

Ø      Is emotionally oriented - she feels

4A.      Communication

1B.      We are to communicate with each other

The facts are…

Ø      Women are more verbal

Ø      Men are more non-verbal

The need is…

Ø      For women to talk less - allow for silence

Ø      For men to listen better and share feelings.

2B.      We are to communicate God to the world

Ø      A godly home is the greatest testimony in the world!

Ø      The world is in desperate need to see a home that works!

5A.      Continuation

1B.      Children are the natural products of the home

That is why God made Adam and Eve not Adam and Steve!

2B.      Children are a reward from God.

Psalms 127:3 (NASB) 3 Behold, children are a gift of the LORD, The fruit of the womb is a reward.

3B.      Our children are the hope for tomorrow.

Psalms 78:4-6 (NASB) 4 We will not conceal them from their children, But tell to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, And His strength and His wondrous works that He has done. 5 For He established a testimony in Jacob And appointed a law in Israel, Which He commanded our fathers That they should teach them to their children, 6 That the generation to come might know, even the children yet to be born, That they may arise and tell them to their children,

Application

Hell attacked the first home!  (3:1-14)

Satan knows if he can hurt you at home he can hurt you every where else.

Hope was restored to the home (3:15)

The first prophecy of Jesus

He is the glue that will hold your home together

Jesus’ First miracle - Wedding

Ø      He can take the water of your disappointment and turn it into the wine of joy.

A true marriage is the union of a man, a woman and Jesus.

You cannot have a Christian home without Christians

You may not be able to have this kind of family - you can have a church family!
