Mark 1:21-28

This morning I'll be reading Mark chapter 1 verses 21 through 28.
And I'll be reading from the Holman Christian Standard Bible.
Mark 1:21-28
The verses that we will look at this morning,,, begin where we left off last week where Jesus had went to Galilee. In these verses,,, they went to Capernaum and He was teaching in the synagogue on the Sabbath.
Mark 1:21–28 (HCSB)
21 Then they went into Capernaum, and right away He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath and began to teach. 22 They were astonished at His teaching because, unlike the scribes, He was teaching them as one having authority. 23 Just then a man with an unclean spirit was in their synagogue. He cried out, 24 “What do You have to do with us, Jesus—Nazarene? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!” 25 But Jesus rebuked him and said, “Be quiet, and come out of him!” 26 And the unclean spirit convulsed him, shouted with a loud voice, and came out of him. 27 Then they were all amazed, so they began to argue with one another, saying, “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him.” 28 News about Him then spread throughout the entire vicinity of Galilee.
God bless the reading and the hearing of your word this morning.
Let us pray:
Dear Lord,,, as we begin this morning,,, with everyone here today and all that are listening and watching by video,,, we ask that you open our ears to hear and our hearts and minds to receive the message that you have for us today,,, In Jesus' name I pray,,, Amen.
-----------------------------------------------------------
As I get started this morning,,, I want you to ask yourself 3 questions,,, that you can answer when we finish.
Keep these questions in the back of your mind as I speak.
The first question is,,, "Do you know Jesus"?
The second question is,,, "Do you know Jesus as well as the unclean spirit,,, that we encounter,,, in these verses"?
The third question is,,, "Do you know Jesus better than,,, the unclean spirit,,, that we encounter,,, in these verses"?
I ask that question,,, because the people at the synagogue that day didn't know Jesus as well as the unclean spirit.
And we have a lot more information about Jesus available to us,,, than the people in attendance that day.
But,,, are we still wondering about who Jesus really is?
Do we really know Jesus like we should?
Lets look at these verses this morning and see how they can help us in our walk with God this week.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Verse 21 says: 21 Then they went into Capernaum, and right away He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath and began to teach.
Verses 21–34 describe a typical day in the life of the Lord,,, even though we are only looking at verses 21 through 28.
Miracle followed miracle as the Great Physician healed the demon-possessed and diseased.
The Savior’s healing miracles illustrate how He liberates men from the dreaded results of sin.
My Believer's Bible Commentary says,,, even though the preacher of the gospel is not called upon to perform these acts of physical healing today,,, he is constantly called upon to deal with their spiritual counterparts.
And are these not the greater miracles the Lord Jesus mentioned in John 14:12,,, where it says: “He who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do?”
--------------------
As it said in the verse above,,, after they went into Capernaum,,, Jesus entered the synagogue on the Sabbath and began to teach.
This was something that Jesus demonstrates over and over,,, all of His life,,, and,,, wherever He goes.
He's always in the synagogue wherever He is at on the Sabbath.
And this was on a Saturday,,, which is the last day of the week,,, and was the day of their Sabbath.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Verse 22 says: 22 They were astonished at His teaching because, unlike the scribes, He was teaching them as one having authority.
The people couldn't believe Jesus' way of teaching because it was so different than what they were used to.
Jesus was speaking with authority,,, not just as someone that knew the law,,, but as One that knew what and where and who,,, the law came from.
Jesus didn't need to quote words from others because He was speaking of the law as He knew it.
And the people were amazed!
They could tell the difference in His way of speaking.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Verses 23 and 24 say: 23 Just then a man with an unclean spirit was in their synagogue. He cried out, 24 “What do You have to do with us, Jesus—Nazarene? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!”
This unclean spirit,,, recognizes Jesus' true character and identity,,, as the Holy One of God!
And He knows that Jesus has the authority,,, and the power,,, to do what He has come to do.
He also knows the danger Jesus is to all of them because of his use of the word "us" where he says,,, Have You come to destroy us?
So he knows that Jesus is a threat to their very existence.
At the beginning I wanted you to remember three questions and the first question I wanted you to think about was,,, "Do you know Jesus?"
I'll talk a little more about this at the end if you know that the answer is no,,, but either way,,, whether it's yes or no,,, I want you to notice that the unclean spirit knows Jesus and the people do not.
The second question was,,, "Do you know Jesus as well as the unclean spirit?"
The unclean spirit knew Jesus,,, knew who He was,,, and why He was there.
He recognized Him immediately.
He apparently knew Jesus better than the people at that time.
Which leads us to the third question,,, "Do you know Jesus better than,,, the unclean spirit?"
I'll talk about all three of these questions after we finish these verses,,, I just wanted to remind you to think about them while I was speaking about the unclean spirits conversation with Jesus.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Verses 25 and 26 say: 25 But Jesus rebuked him and said, “Be quiet, and come out of him!” 26 And the unclean spirit convulsed him, shouted with a loud voice, and came out of him.
Jesus didn't want recognition from this spirit,,, and He knew that the people weren't ready for this news because if they understood the spirit now,,, there might have been a revolt to rise up and try to make Him king,,, and that wasn't His intention,,, even though that's what they were expecting from the Messiah!
So Jesus commanded the spirit to come out of the man,,, verse 26 said: 26 And the unclean spirit convulsed him, shouted with a loud voice, and came out of him.
Immediately the unclean spirit came out,,, the scripture here says convulsed him,,, and the King James says "torn him" but in Luke 4:35 it says that he wasn't injured at all.
But,,, I imagine that is was still something to see and hear that day.
And we get the peoples reaction in the next verse.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Verse 27 says: 27 Then they were all amazed, so they began to argue with one another, saying, “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him.”
Earlier the people had been amazed at Jesus' teaching,,, here they are amazed that with just a few words the spirit obeyed and came out of him.
This gives a view of things to come,,, of the way that Jesus will be successful in His battle over demonic forces.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Verse 28 says: 28 News about Him then spread throughout the entire vicinity of Galilee.
Since the people were so amazed at all that they had seen that day,,, news spread all over the region.
This brings people from far and wide as they learn more about Him.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Which brings us back to the three questions that I asked at the beginning.
The first question was,,, "Do you know Jesus?"
Knowledge about Jesus is different than really knowing Jesus.
We must really know Jesus and have that relationship to truly know Him.
If you don't know Him,,, all you have to do,,, is understand that only one thing keeps us from Him, and that is our sin.
But Jesus came to erase our sins by His death on the cross,,, and as we open our hearts to Him,,, He comes to live within us.
By faith ask Jesus to take away your sins and come into your life today—and He will.
--------------------
The second question was,,, "Do you know Jesus as well as the unclean spirit?"
This question could be for any of you that are confessing Christians,,, but are only Christians on Sunday.
You know Jesus,,, you've gotten a taste or a small portion of Jesus,,, but you haven't given your all to Jesus yet.
Like I said earlier,,, the unclean spirit knew about Jesus,,, but he lacked the relationship to really know Him.
If you feel conviction from this,,, confess your sins to Jesus and ask forgiveness,,, make your relationship with God really personal,,, and stick with it this time.
God loves you,,, and He wants what's best for you,,, and He wants you with Him,,, every day,,, and,,, forever!
--------------------
Which brings us to the third question,,, "Do you know Jesus better than,,, the unclean spirit?"
The personal relationship that you have with the Holy Spirit gives you the connection you need to truly "know" Jesus!
It's that relationship that allows us the privilege today to go to God in prayer and receive instruction from Him personally.
It's that type of relationship that allows us to be in conversation with Him all throughout the day.
It's that type of relationship that means that we are never alone because He has promised to never leave us nor forsake us!
And it's that type of personal relationship that means that for those of us that has this,,, we do know Jesus better than the unclean spirit ever will!
Because with the Holy Spirits help,,, He lives inside us,,, He's involved in our day to day activities,,, and we wouldn't know how to make it through the day without Him!
-----------------------------------------------------------
So now that we have answered the three questions this morning,,, hopefully as you go through your week,,, you will remember these verses and know where you stand,,, and what you need to do,,, to better your today,,, your tomorrow,,, and your forever!
