1 Samuel 17:19–23 NKJV
Now Saul and they and all the men of Israel were in the Valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines. So David rose early in the morning, left the sheep with a keeper, and took the things and went as Jesse had commanded him. And he came to the camp as the army was going out to the fight and shouting for the battle. For Israel and the Philistines had drawn up in battle array, army against army. And David left his supplies in the hand of the supply keeper, ran to the army, and came and greeted his brothers. Then as he talked with them, there was the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, coming up from the armies of the Philistines; and he spoke according to the same words. So David heard them.
There is something to be said here in this passage the obvious Giant in the story is Goliath The one right our in the open drawing your focus but I don't think this is the one David cared for.
Remember back in the last chapter it was Samuel the Profit of God Who annionted not the largest, not the strongest, not the wisest but the weakest youngest of all the brothers let us look back to it
1 Samuel 16:1–13 NKJV
Now the Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go; I am sending you to Jesse the Bethlehemite. For I have provided Myself a king among his sons.” And Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul hears it, he will kill me.” But the Lord said, “Take a heifer with you, and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.’ Then invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do; you shall anoint for Me the one I name to you.” So Samuel did what the Lord said, and went to Bethlehem. And the elders of the town trembled at his coming, and said, “Do you come peaceably?” And he said, “Peaceably; I have come to sacrifice to the Lord. Sanctify yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice.” Then he consecrated Jesse and his sons, and invited them to the sacrifice. So it was, when they came, that he looked at Eliab and said, “Surely the Lord’s anointed is before Him!” But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him. For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” So Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, “Neither has the Lord chosen this one.” Then Jesse made Shammah pass by. And he said, “Neither has the Lord chosen this one.” Thus Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel. And Samuel said to Jesse, “The Lord has not chosen these.” And Samuel said to Jesse, “Are all the young men here?” Then he said, “There remains yet the youngest, and there he is, keeping the sheep.” And Samuel said to Jesse, “Send and bring him. For we will not sit down till he comes here.” So he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, with bright eyes, and good-looking. And the Lord said, “Arise, anoint him; for this is the one!” Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel arose and went to Ramah.
The Giant is not always the obvious one,Goliath was ready for war calling out all of Gods people to come and make battle David was ready for God had long been preparing him for this day as a Shepherd Boy the Bible recounts that He struck down a bear and an Lion so this giant before him was yet one more foe that would fall For David knew The truth that would latter be written by Paul
Romans 8:31 NKJV
What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?
But the quiet lurking Giant stood not on the opposing battle fields but in His own camp not only in His own camp but His own brothers
1 Samuel 17:24–37 NKJV
And all the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him and were dreadfully afraid. So the men of Israel said, “Have you seen this man who has come up? Surely he has come up to defy Israel; and it shall be that the man who kills him the king will enrich with great riches, will give him his daughter, and give his father’s house exemption from taxes in Israel.” Then David spoke to the men who stood by him, saying, “What shall be done for the man who kills this Philistine and takes away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?” And the people answered him in this manner, saying, “So shall it be done for the man who kills him.” Now Eliab his oldest brother heard when he spoke to the men; and Eliab’s anger was aroused against David, and he said, “Why did you come down here? And with whom have you left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know your pride and the insolence of your heart, for you have come down to see the battle.” And David said, “What have I done now? Is there not a cause?” Then he turned from him toward another and said the same thing; and these people answered him as the first ones did. Now when the words which David spoke were heard, they reported them to Saul; and he sent for him. Then David said to Saul, “Let no man’s heart fail because of him; your servant will go and fight with this Philistine.” And Saul said to David, “You are not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him; for you are a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.” But David said to Saul, “Your servant used to keep his father’s sheep, and when a lion or a bear came and took a lamb out of the flock, I went out after it and struck it, and delivered the lamb from its mouth; and when it arose against me, I caught it by its beard, and struck and killed it. Your servant has killed both lion and bear; and this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, seeing he has defied the armies of the living God.” Moreover David said, “The Lord, who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, He will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” And Saul said to David, “Go, and the Lord be with you!”
Sometimes our greatest enemies are our friends they are our allies they may mean the best but they try to keep us from fulfilling the purpose God has put in us as we saw in king saw He didn't want to see this young boy slaughtered he lacked faith that God would be victorious, They may be overcome with Jealousy as we see with his brothers
*Difficult people never appreciate what you do for them
Let me ask you as important as it is to be watchful for those who will drag us down be watchful that the devil doesn't use us to drag others down
*Importance of Spiritual Friends
Remain Strong and courageous in your situation in spite of what others say for it is not them you need to fight your battle but God
Psalm 21:1 NKJV
The king shall have joy in Your strength, O Lord; And in Your salvation how greatly shall he rejoice!
Fear God........................ Not your enimies Fear God not approval of friends and family
For he is author of Life and death
Seek someone you can trust
1 Samuel 20:18–22 NKJV
Then Jonathan said to David, “Tomorrow is the New Moon; and you will be missed, because your seat will be empty. And when you have stayed three days, go down quickly and come to the place where you hid on the day of the deed; and remain by the stone Ezel. Then I will shoot three arrows to the side, as though I shot at a target; and there I will send a lad, saying, ‘Go, find the arrows.’ If I expressly say to the lad, ‘Look, the arrows are on this side of you; get them and come’—then, as the Lord lives, there is safety for you and no harm. But if I say thus to the young man, ‘Look, the arrows are beyond you’—go your way, for the Lord has sent you away.
Hebrews 10:24–25 NKJV
And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.
Be sure that you are the Good friend that does stir up love in one another, Dont be Davids father.............dont be davids brothers................dont be King saul...................Be a real friend like Johnathan was to david
1 Samuel 20:31–42 NKJV
For as long as the son of Jesse lives on the earth, you shall not be established, nor your kingdom. Now therefore, send and bring him to me, for he shall surely die.” And Jonathan answered Saul his father, and said to him, “Why should he be killed? What has he done?” Then Saul cast a spear at him to kill him, by which Jonathan knew that it was determined by his father to kill David. So Jonathan arose from the table in fierce anger, and ate no food the second day of the month, for he was grieved for David, because his father had treated him shamefully. And so it was, in the morning, that Jonathan went out into the field at the time appointed with David, and a little lad was with him. Then he said to his lad, “Now run, find the arrows which I shoot.” As the lad ran, he shot an arrow beyond him. When the lad had come to the place where the arrow was which Jonathan had shot, Jonathan cried out after the lad and said, “Is not the arrow beyond you?” And Jonathan cried out after the lad, “Make haste, hurry, do not delay!” So Jonathan’s lad gathered up the arrows and came back to his master. But the lad did not know anything. Only Jonathan and David knew of the matter. Then Jonathan gave his weapons to his lad, and said to him, “Go, carry them to the city.” As soon as the lad had gone, David arose from a place toward the south, fell on his face to the ground, and bowed down three times. And they kissed one another; and they wept together, but David more so. Then Jonathan said to David, “Go in peace, since we have both sworn in the name of the Lord, saying, ‘May the Lord be between you and me, and between your descendants and my descendants, forever.’ ” So he arose and departed, and Jonathan went into the city.
Understand your trials
Psalm 103:13–14 NKJV
As a father pities his children, So the Lord pities those who fear Him. For He knows our frame; He remembers that we are dust.
Rest assured God will make His will known
Romans 12:1–2 NKJV
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
1 Samuel 16:12–13 NKJV
So he sent and brought him in.
God knew even then, even then through the jealousy of his brothers, the doubt in His father God was making Him ready as he did to fight Goliath by preparing Him with a loin with a bear so that he could strike down the mighty Goliath God was preparing David in real life lessons to face the real trials of Jealousy of King Saul, God knew even the , and even then Gods will was perfectly planned out , David would become King and Saul would fall God would have it no other way, God used adversity to make a Shepherd boy into a great leader into a great king and he is doing the same for you
You will never find the will of God until you surrender your self totally to Him, This is why God chose David He was a man after His own heart are you a man a woman after the heart of God ?
Remember God will take care of your needs not wants
David went through some very difficult times while he was on the Run from Saul yet God was there he always had enough, enough food money time saftey maybe not what david wanted and if we look at the psalms many times david felt all alone and he cried out to God
Psalm 142 NKJV
A Contemplation Of David. A Prayer When He Was in the Cave. I cry out to the Lord with my voice; With my voice to the Lord I make my supplication. I pour out my complaint before Him; I declare before Him my trouble. When my spirit was overwhelmed within me, Then You knew my path. In the way in which I walk They have secretly set a snare for me. Look on my right hand and see, For there is no one who acknowledges me; Refuge has failed me; No one cares for my soul. I cried out to You, O Lord: I said, “You are my refuge, My portion in the land of the living. Attend to my cry, For I am brought very low; Deliver me from my persecutors, For they are stronger than I. Bring my soul out of prison, That I may praise Your name; The righteous shall surround me, For You shall deal bountifully with me.”
Notice David was discouraged................... David had a heavy heart................... David cried out in prayer
learn to fight your Giants through Prayer
The Giants of life will surely come, How will you respond will you cut and run as the parable of the soils suggests when hard times fade away from God try to fix it on your own power or maybe even get angry at God will you?
Remember sometimes the Giants are not allways the obvious ones
Becarful who you surround yourself with
Find a family of believers that you can trust
Turn to God in prayer to fight you battles
Or Will you turn to Him like David in faith and say God I don't understand I am pouring my heart out to you I don't know why this is happening but I will trust in you for like David you are still working on me because of your great love for me and in this I rejoice
Will you surrender your heart to Him that he can replace it with his Heart?
That you may be known to Him as a man or woman after Gods own heart
