David’s anointing broke some precedents

First and Second Samuel 1 Samuel 16:1–13

The eighth son is the youngest, surely unimpressive, with no claim to make and no credentials to present

David being the 8th son, gets us away from the number 7 which has historically been the number of completion
God goes beyond this number to get us to David

David was anointed while there was still a King

The oil binds Samuel (and Yahweh) in a firm loyalty to this shepherd boy who is to become king

This had to be a difficult place to be
