WHAT WE BELIEVE ABOUT THE SECOND COMING OF CHRIST
Acts 1:9-11
INTRODUCTION
First and Second Comings predicted
40% of the Bible was prophetic when it was written...
Enoch
Jude 1:14 (NIV)... "See, the Lord is coming with thousands upon thousands of his holy ones
David
Psalms 102:16 (NIV) For the LORD will rebuild Zion and appear in his glory.
Daniel
Daniel 7:13 (NIV) "In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven.
Zechariah
Zechariah 14:4 (NIV) On that day his feet will stand on the Mount of Olives,
Jesus
John 14:3 (NIV) And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.
Revelation 22:20 (NIV) "Yes, I am coming soon."
1A. WILL BE A VISIBLE RETURN (11; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-17)
Five Important Aspects...
The redeemer
The resurrection
The rapture
The rewards
The revelation
1B. The Redeemer (16a)
“This same Jesus...”
(Hebrews 13:8) Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.
DOCTRINE OR PERSON
Not so much concerned with the return of Christ as I am the Christ of the return. Return of our troops after the Gulf War. No one kissed the plane or the pilot. They all ran to him. They were not so much caught up with the event of his return as they were the return of a person.
2B. The Resurrection (16b)
Three times Jesus shouted ‑ each time resurrection occurred...
Before the tomb of Lazarus
On the cross and the saints came out of their graves
In the sky some day and the dead shall rise
(1 Corinthians 15:55) "Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?"
3B. The Rapture (17)
Noah and Lot - 2 Peter 2:4-9
Punishment (4,6,9b-10) Great Tribulation
Protection (5,7, 9a)
4B. The Rewards
Bema - Judgement seat
(2 Corinthians 5:10) For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive what is due him for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.
Marriage supper of the Lamb
(Revelation 19:9) ...'Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding supper of the Lamb!'"...
When He comes he'll catch us up,
He'll take us to the Judgement Seat and clean us up
He'll take us to the Marriage Supper and cheer us up.
5B. The Revelation
“Will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven...” Acts 1:11b
(Zechariah 14:4) On that day his feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, east of Jerusalem, and the Mount of Olives will be split in two from east to west, forming a great valley, with half of the mountain moving north and half moving south.
2A. WILL BE A VICTORIOUS RETURN
1B. Sin and Satan will be Condemned
Revelation 20:10-15
2B. Sovereignty will be Confirmed (21:3)
(1 Corinthians 15:24) Then the end will come, when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father after he has destroyed all dominion, authority and power.
3B. Salvation will be Completed
For the physical world (21:1)
(2 Peter 3:12‑13) as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. {13} But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, the home of righteousness.
For the Christian (21:3-4)
Richard The Lion‑Hearted
The return of Richard the Lionhearted was one of the thrilling epochs of the English people. All of England loved Richard. He was a great leader of men. He was a wrestler, a runner, a poet, and a general. While Richard was away in the Crusades, his kingdom fell on hard times. His wicked brother, John, sought to capture the throne. John was a selfish, cruel, wicked man. The people suffered, and they longed for Richard's return.
Richard returned. He landed on the shores of England and marched straight for his throne. The castles of John tumbled like bowling pens. None dared stand in his place and he marched straight to hi throne, there to reign again. The bells of London rang, the people shouted, " The Lion is back. Long live the King!"
3A. MAY BE VERY SOON!
(Mark 13:32) "No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.
APPLICATION
The Ten Virgins - Matthew 25:1-13
No Second Chances
2 Thessalonians 2:1-13
(2 Thessalonians 2:10‑12)... They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. {11} For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie {12} and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness.
Today may be your last chance!
