A Time is Coming
Jesus’ Authority
John 1-5
(Some things to consider :)
1. In John Chapter 1, John establishes Jesus’ authority by declaring Him as the creator of all things.
• Did Jesus coexist with the Father?
• Who or what was God’s agent of creation?
• What was Jesus’ purpose in coming to the world?
• How does John the Baptist’s testimony establish Jesus as the Messiah?
2. Chapter 2, John establishes Jesus’ authority by declaring Him the Messiah by the miracles He performs (John 1:19-34).
• John 2:1-11 is Jesus’ first recorded miracle of the Bible. Why do you believe Jesus preformed this miracle?
• John 2:12-22 “The Cleansing of Temple” is mentioned twice in Scriptures. Here at the beginning of Jesus’s ministry and then later recorded by Luke in Chapter 19:45-48, and Matthew 21:12-17. Do you believe that these are two separate incidents or maybe John did not put it in the right chronological order? What is your opinion?
• Why would Jesus not do miracles to prove himself in Jerusalem at the Passover? (2:23-25).
3. In Chapter 3 Jesus’s Authority is established by being the one “Sent from Above.” The one sent from the Father.
• Who Was Nicodemus?
• Why did he not understand what Jesus was talking about when he told him “he must be born again?”
• Do you believe John the Baptist was jealous of Jesus’ ministry? Why or why not?
4. Chapter 4 Jesus is the Lord of the Harvest and the Savior of the World.
• What was the result of Jesus’ conversation with the Samaritan woman? (4:7-45)
• What was it about the Royal Official’s faith that impressed Jesus? (4:46-54)
5. Chapter 5 the Father has given the Son, Jesus, authority to Judge the world.
• Why were the religious officials upset because Jesus preformed a healing? (5:1-17)
• Why did the religious leaders want to kill Jesus? (5:18-24)
• What is the resurrection? Why is it important? (5:25-32)
• What are the 4 witnesses Jesus uses to prove His authority? (5:33-47)
