I. The magintude of God’s person
For God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.”
A. The names ascribed to God denote personality.
Jehovah-Jireh: The Lord will provide: Gen. 22:13,
Then Abraham looked up and saw a ram caught by its horns in a thicket. So he took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering in place of his son.
Jehovah-Rapha: The Lord that healeth: Exod. 15:26.
He said, “If you will listen carefully to the voice of the Lord your God and do what is right in his sight, obeying his commands and keeping all his decrees, then I will not make you suffer any of the diseases I sent on the Egyptians; for I am the Lord who heals you.”
Jehovah-Nissi: The Lord our Banner: Exod. 17:8–15.
While the people of Israel were still at Rephidim, the warriors of Amalek attacked them. Moses commanded Joshua, “Choose some men to go out and fight the army of Amalek for us. Tomorrow, I will stand at the top of the hill, holding the staff of God in my hand.”
So Joshua did what Moses had commanded and fought the army of Amalek. Meanwhile, Moses, Aaron, and Hur climbed to the top of a nearby hill. As long as Moses held up the staff in his hand, the Israelites had the advantage. But whenever he dropped his hand, the Amalekites gained the advantage. Moses’ arms soon became so tired he could no longer hold them up. So Aaron and Hur found a stone for him to sit on. Then they stood on each side of Moses, holding up his hands. So his hands held steady until sunset. As a result, Joshua overwhelmed the army of Amalek in battle.
After the victory, the Lord instructed Moses, “Write this down on a scroll as a permanent reminder, and read it aloud to Joshua: I will erase the memory of Amalek from under heaven.” Moses built an altar there and named it Yahweh-nissi (which means “the Lord is my banner”).
Jehovah-Shalom: The Lord our Peace: Judg. 6:24
And Gideon built an altar to the Lord there and named it Yahweh-Shalom (which means “the Lord is peace”). The altar remains in Ophrah in the land of the clan of Abiezer to this day.
Jehovah-Raah: The Lord my Shepherd: Ps. 23:1.
The Lord is my shepherd;
I have all that I need.
Jehovah-Tsidekenu: The Lord our Righteousness: Jer. 23:6
And this will be his name:
‘The Lord Is Our Righteousness.’
In that day Judah will be saved,
and Israel will live in safety.
Jehovah-Shammah: The Lord is present: Ezek. 48:35.
“The distance around the entire city will be 6 miles. And from that day the name of the city will be ‘The Lord Is There.’”
II. The magnitude of God’s power
II. The magnitude of God’s power
The Son radiates God’s own glory and expresses the very character of God, and he sustains everything by the mighty power of his command. When he had cleansed us from our sins, he sat down in the place of honor at the right hand of the majestic God in heaven.
For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God.
He is omniscient. He knows all things: Prov. 5:21; 15:3; Ps. 147:4; Matt. 10:29.
He is omniscient. He knows all things: Prov. 5:21; 15:3; Ps. 147:4; Matt. 10:29.
He is omnipotent. He brings to pass everything He wills: Job 42:2; Gen. 18:14.
Is anything too hard for the Lord? I will return about this time next year, and Sarah will have a son.”
“I know that you can do anything,
and no one can stop you.
He is omnipresent. He is everywhere present: Jer. 23:23, 24; Ps. 139:7.
I can never escape from your Spirit!
I can never get away from your presence!
Am I a God who is only close at hand?” says the Lord.
“No, I am far away at the same time.
He is immutable. He is the same: Hab. 1:12; Mal. 3:6
“I am the Lord, and I do not change. That is why you descendants of Jacob are not already destroyed.
O Lord my God, my Holy One, you who are eternal—
surely you do not plan to wipe us out?
O Lord, our Rock, you have sent these Babylonians to correct us,
to punish us for our many sins.
III. The magnitude of God’s purpose
III. The magnitude of God’s purpose
A. The Son is the special object of God’s love: Matt. 3:17.
And a voice from heaven said, “This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy.”
B. The believer is the special object of God’s love: John 16:27; 17:23.
I am in them and you are in me. May they experience such perfect unity that the world will know that you sent me and that you love them as much as you love me.
for the Father himself loves you dearly because you love me and believe that I came from God.
C. The sinner is the special object of God’s love: John 3:16; Rom. 5:8.
But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.
“For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.
