There Is Still A Star In The Sky

“R” IS FOR REDEEMER

Matthew 1:21

INTRODUCTION

Series Background

(Matthew 2:2) ..."Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him."

He is the Star!!!

In Numbers He is the Star of Jacob...

(Numbers 24:17)  ".... A star will come out of Jacob; a scepter will rise out of Israel. He will crush the foreheads of Moab, the skulls of all the sons of Sheth.

In 2 Peter He is the Star that shines in our  hearts...

(2 Peter 1:19) ... a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.

In Revelation He is the Bright Morning Star...

(Revelation 22:16)  "... I am the Root and the Offspring of David, and the bright Morning Star."

If We Had Needed....

If we had needed knowledge,

He would have sent us an educator.

If we had needed health,

He would have sent us a doctor.

If we had needed wisdom,

He would have sent us a philosopher.

If we had needed harmony,

He would have sent us a musician.

If we had needed wealth,

He would have sent us an economist.

If we had needed success,

He would have sent us an efficiency expert.

But we needed a Redeemer,

He sent us Jesus.

A thousand times in history, a baby has become a King

but only once in history did a king become a baby!

Let us look now at this glorious redeemer!

Three distinct events that set Jesus apart...

The Cradle - The Cross - The Crown!

1A.       THE CRADLE - INCARNATION (John 1:1,14)

1B.       His Deity - He Was All God(1)

He is eternal with God

(John 17:5)  And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began.

He is equal with God

(Philippians 2:6)  Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped,

2B.       His Humanity - He Was All Man (14)

In His appearance

(Philippians 2:7‑8)  but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. {8} And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death‑‑ even death on a cross!

In His appetites

He got hungry and thirsty

(Mark 11:12)  The next day as they were leaving Bethany, Jesus was hungry.

(John 19:28) ... Jesus said, "I am thirsty."

He got tired

(John 4:6) ...and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well...

2A.       THE CROSS - PROPITIATION (Isaiah 53:3-9)

(1 John 2:2)  He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.

1B.       The Scorn of the Cross(3)

2B.       The Sorrow of the Cross (4)

3B.       The Suffering of the Cross (5)

4B.       The Substitution of the Cross (6)

5B.       The Silence of the Cross (7)

6B.       The Separation of the Cross (8-9)

7B.       The Significance of the Cross (12)

H. A. Ironside once told the following:

Pioneers were making their way across one of the central states in covered wagons drawn by oxen, and progress was necessarily slow. One day they were horrified to note a long line of smoke in the west, stretching for miles across the prairie, and soon it was evident that the dried grass was burning fiercely, and was coming toward them rapidly. They had crossed a river the day before but it would be impossible to go back to that before the flames would be upon them. One man only seemed to have an understanding as to what should be done. He gave the command to set fire to the grass behind them. Then when a space was burned over, the whole company moved back upon it.  As the flames roared on toward them from the west, a little girl cried out in terror. "Are you sure we shall not all be burned up?" The leader replied, "My child, the flames can reach us here, for we are standing where the fire has been!"

On Him Almighty vengeance fell,

Which would have sunk a world to hell.

He bore it for a chosen race,

And thus becomes our Hiding Place.

3A.       THE CROWN - CORONATION (Rev 19:11-16)

1B.       His Return (11)

It will be visible...

It will be victorious...

2B.       His Royalty (12-13)

Sovereign - “blazing eyes”

Supreme - “many crowns”

Sinless Sacrifice - “robe dipped in blood”

3B.       His Reign (14-16)

Absolute (14-15)

Autonomous (16)

APPLICATION

Look upon His Humanity - He knows you

Look upon His Humility - He Loves you

Look upon His Majesty - He rules you
