Mark 9:14-29 (Matthew 17:11-23; Luke 9:37-42)

INTRODUCTION

Scriptural Background

The Transfigured Lord

The Tormented Lad

The Troubled Leaders

Contemporary Background

We don’t have too much trouble believing that Jesus is who He said.

What we have trouble with is believing that Jesus can still do what he said he would do!

We believe that He is the Savior, but do we see evidence of His saving power in and around us?

We believe He did miracles, but do we see Him doing miracles?

The problem is not with Jesus - It is with us.

Let’s learn how we can begin seeing God’s miracles in our midst.

Jesus shares FIVE MUSTS of His Miracles...

1A.       We Must Pray (9:29)

1B.       Specifically (9:22)

James 4:2 “You lust and do not have.  You murder and covet and cannot obtain.  You fight and war.  Yet you do not have because you do not ask.”

2B.       Sincerely

James 5:16 “Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed.  The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.”

3B.       Confidently (9:23)

1 John 5:14-15 “Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.  And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him.”

Matthew 21:22 “And whatever things you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive.”

2A.       WE MUST FAST (29)

1B        Why?  (2 Chronicles 20:1-3)

Fasting is a response to God’s movement in my life - not my attempt to manipulate God!

2B.       How?  (Matthew 6:16-18)

3B.       When? - When the burden demands it!

4B.       How long? - Until the burden leaves.

3A.       WE Must Confess

1B.       That we have depended on man and not God(9:17-18)

Proverbs 16:25 “There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.”

2B.       That we have doubted our Lord (9:24)

Matthew 13:58 “Now He did not do many mighty works there because of their unbelief.”

4A.       WE Must Trust (9:23; Matthew 17:20)

1B.       His word (9:23)

2 Timothy 3:16 “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness”

2B.       His ways

Isaiah 55:8-9 “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways," says the LORD.  For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts.”

5A.       We Must Proclaim

1B.       God’s power (9:25-27)

We often want to take some of the credit

Isaiah 48:11 “For My own sake, for My own sake, I will do it; For how should My name be profaned? And I will not give My glory to another.”

2B.       God’s purpose (9:28-32)

Jesus was preparing them for His coming death!
