THE HOLY SPIRIT - HIS PERSON: THE MYSTERY

John 14:16-18; 26; 15:26; 16:7, 13-14

INTRODUCTION

The Missing Element of the Christian Life - The Holy Spirit!

Someone put it this way and I agree. They said the average Christian is somewhere between Calvary and Pentecost. They have been to Calvary for pardon, but they have not been to Pentecost for power. Bethlehem means God with us. Calvary means God for us. Pentecost means God in us

Scriptural Background

Chapter 13 - Jesus tells them he is leaving (John 13:33)

They are Nervous - They do not do well without Jesus!  They are beginning a journey without their Guide...

Billy recent trip to Venezuela - Best Friend was his guide.

This is the way it is for us as Christians...

The Holy Spirit is our guide and our best Friend!!

Chapters 14 - 16: Jesus comforts them

Four times He promises to send a Counselor/Comforter (14:16; 26; 15:26; 16:7)

Counselor = parakletos; an intercessor, consoler:‑‑advocate, comforter.

Who is this Counselor...

1A.       HIS PERSONALITY

1B.       He is Referred to as a Person (14:17; 15:26; 16:7)

2B.       He has Personality Traits

Personality does not require a body

Intellect- He can think

(Romans 8:27 NIV)  "And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God's will."

(1 Corinthians 2:11) ...no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.

Emotions - He can feel

(Romans 15:30 NIV)  "I urge you, brothers, by our Lord Jesus Christ and by the love of the Spirit, to join me in my struggle by praying to God for me."

(Ephesians 4:30)  And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, ...

Will - He can act

(1 Corinthians 12:11)  All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he gives them to each one, just as he determines.

3B.       He Relates to Man Personally

He is a total person - not a force.

He is not an “it” to had, but a person to inhabit us (1 Corinthians 6:19)

He is just like Jesus (16)

“Another”= of the same kind!

2A.       HIS DEITY

1B.       His Works Assert His Deity

Creation (Genesis 1:2; Job 33:4)

Inspiration (2 Peter 1:21)

Regeneration (Titus 3:5)

2B.       His Names Announce His Deity

The Spirit of God (Genesis 1:2)

The Spirit of Jesus (Acts 16:7; Philippians 1:19)

The Spirit of Truth (John 14:17; 15:26; 16:13)

3B.       His Nature Assures His Deity

Eternal (Hebrews 9:14)

Omniscient (1 Corinthians 2:10-11)

Omnipresent (Psalms 139:7)

Omnipotent (Luke 1:35)

Holy (Romans 1:4)

3A.       HIS MINISTRY

1B.       His Indwelling (14:17)

(1 Corinthians 3:16)  "Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit lives in you?"

(John 14:16)  "And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever‑‑"

2B.       His Instruction (14:26)

3B.       His Enabling (15:26)

He will make us a witness of Him

He will glorify Jesus (16:14)

We can do it because He does it...

(Matthew 10:20)  "for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you."

APPLICATION

Do You Have A Guide?

It is said that a certain guide lived in the deserts of Arabia who never lost his way.  He carried with him a homing pigeon with a very fine cord attached to one of its legs.  When in doubt as to which path to take, he threw the bird into the air.  The pigeon quickly strained at the cord to fly in the direction of home, and thus led the guide accurately to his goal.  Because of this unique practice he was known as "the dove man."

So, too, the Holy Spirit, the heavenly Dove, is willing and able to direct us in the narrow way that leads to the more abundant life if in humble self‑denial we submit to His unerring supervision.
