THE KIND OF MOTHER EVERY CHILD NEEDS

Proverbs 31:28-29

INTRODUCTION

You know you are a mother when:

...your 3-year old calls you into the bathroom to retrieve the Star Wars soldier out of the toilet.

...your freezer is packed with 27 boxes of Girls Scout cookies your daughter couldn’t see to anybody else.

...you are in a clothing store and your teenage daughter keeps calling you by your first name, so nobody will suspect that she is shopping with her mother.

...you catch yourself singing the theme song from the “Barney” show.

...you have an assortment of 17 handmade clay ashtrays, and no one in your family smokes.

...your son comes home from college and has rented a U-Haul trailer to carry the dirty clothes he wants you to wash.

Moms are special Folks...

There is more to being a Mom than just having babies...

Portrait of a Mother

A mother can be almost any size or age, but she won’t admit to anything over thirty.  She has soft hands and smells good.  A mother likes new dresses, music, a clean house, her children’s kisses, an automatic dishwasher, and Daddy.

A mother doesn’t like having her children sick, muddy feet, temper tantrums, loud noise, or bad report cards.  She can read a thermometer (much to the amazement of Daddy) and like magic, can kiss a hurt away.  She can also bake good cakes and pies, but likes to see the children eat vegetables.

A mother can stuff a fat baby into a snowsuit in seconds and can kiss little faces and make them smile.  She is underpaid, has long hours, and gets very little rest.  She worries too much about her children.  And no matter how old they are, she still likes to think of them as her little babies.

A mother is the guardian angel of the family, the queen, the tender hand of love.  She is the best friend anyone ever has.  A mother is love.

The Kind of Mother Every Child Needs Is...

1A.       A PRAYING MOTHER - HANNAH

1B.       That Petitions God on Behalf of her Children (1 Samuel 1:10-11)

2B.       That Pours out her Heart to God on Behalf of her Children (1:12-16)

Have you ever wondered why mothers cry?

One time a little boy asked his mother, “Why do you cry so much?”  “Because I am a mother,” she told him.  “I don’t understand,” he said.  His mom just hugged him tightly and said, “You never will.”  Later the boy asked his father why Mother seemed to cry for no reason.  “All mothers cry for no reason,” was all his dad could say.

The little boy grew up, still wondering why mothers cry, so he finally asked God.  God said, “You see, when I made mothers, they had to be special.  I made their shoulders strong enough to carry the weight of the world.  I gave them the inner strength to endure childbirth and the rejection that eventually comes from their children.  I gave them a hardiness that allows them to keep going when everyone else gives up, and to take care of their families through sickness and fatigue without complaining.

I gave them the sensitivity to love their children under all circumstances, and no matter how badly they are hurt.  This same sensitivity helps them to make a child’s boo-boo feel better, and helps them share a son’s teen-age anxieties.  I gave them a tear to shed.  It’s theirs exclusively to use whenever it is needed.  It’s their only weakness.  It’s a tear for mankind.”

3B.       She Praises God for the Blessing of her Children (2:1-10)

(1 Samuel 2:5)  "Those who were full hire themselves out for food, but those who were hungry hunger no more. She who was barren has borne seven children, but she who has had many sons pines away."

2A.       A PROTECTING MOTHER - JOCHEBED

1B.       She Protects her Children from Physical Danger (Exodus 2:1-4)

This letter was written by a woman who had aborted her child:

My Dear Sam,

I am so grieved that I sent you away before you took your first breath, before I could hold you in my arms and smell your sweet baby scent. I am so sorry I didn't give you a chance to play baseball or go swimming or catch frogs and lightening bugs. I am sorry you had to pay for my sin with your life. The cost was too high for you. Praise God that He gave His own son for my sin. The dear Lamb of God that takes away the sins of the world.

Sam, I can see you standing with Jesus. I know that you are not hurting anymore and that you are not alone. That gives me such peace and comfort. I can see you with your brown curly hair and big brown eyes, dangling your toes in the Crystal River and sitting underneath the Tree of Life. How I long to see what you see. I know that Granny G. is there and that you know how special she was to me. Your sisters and I are coming soon. We pray that Jesus will come quickly. I am happy that you know no anger and hatred, only peace and love. We will be together soon.

   I love you, Mommy

2B.       She Protects her Children from Social Danger (Exodus 2:5-10)

Jachebed instilled his Hebrew heritage into Moses as a baby!

3B.       She Protects her Children from Spiritual Danger (Hebrews 11:24-28)

Moses chose the things of God! - What a testimony to a Mother’s witness!

3A.       A PROFESSING MOTHER - EUNICE

(2 Timothy 1:5)  "I have been reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also."

1B.       That Shows her Faith

“Sincere” = an‑oo‑pok'‑ree‑tos; sincere:‑‑without hypocrisy, unfeigned.

2B.       That Shares he Faith

“Now lives in you also...”

Who will tell your children about Jesus?

The Heart of a Child

Whatever you write

On the heart of a child,

No water can wash it away.

The sands may be shifted

When billows are wild,

And the efforts of time may decay.

Some stories may perish,

Some songs be forgot,

But this engraved record,

Time changes it not.

Whatever you write

In the heart of a child

A story of gladness or care--

That heaven has blessed

Or that earth has defiled,

Will linger unchangeably there.

Who writes it has sealed it

Forever and aye.

He must answer to God

On that great judgement day.
