THE HOLY SPIRIT: HIS PAST - THE HISTORY
2 Peter 1:21
INTRODUCTION
The Holy Spirit has always existed
He has always fulfilled a role as part of the Trinity.
Before Pentecost - He was “with man”
(Psalms 51:11) "Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me."
After Pentecost - He is “within man”
What was His Role in the OT...
“Spirit” = ruwach, wind; by resemblance breath, fig. life, anger, by resemblance spirit, but only of a rational being (include. its expression and functions)
Often the Holy Spirit is referred to as the wind or breath of God.
In the OT He is often seen as the movement of God’s power. He is compared to the wind in that we see the evidence of the Spirit not the Spirit Himself.
He is often seen coming upon people, places and things...
Moses, Prophets, etc...
The Tabernancle and Temple
The Ark of the Covenant
Let’s examine three major “works” of the HS in the OT...
1A. HIS WORK OF CREATION
1B. He Is The Original Cause
He created the world proper
(Genesis 1:2) "Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters."
He created man in particular
(Genesis 2:7) "the LORD God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being."
(Job 33:4) "The Spirit of God has made me; the breath of the Almighty gives me life."
2B. He Is The Only Control
Seen in His plans
(Isaiah 34:16) "Look in the scroll of the LORD and read: None of these will be missing, not one will lack her mate. For it is his mouth that has given the order, and his Spirit will gather them together."
Substantiated by His power
(Isaiah 40:7) "The grass withers and the flowers fall, because the breath of the LORD blows on them. Surely the people are grass."
2A. HIS WORK OF SALVATION
1B. Reveals the Word of God
(2 Samuel 23:2) ""The Spirit of the LORD spoke through me; his word was on my tongue."
(Psalms 119:11) "I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you."
(Psalms 119:105) "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path."
2B. Reveals the Ways of God
(Proverbs 13:15) "Good understanding wins favor, but the way of the unfaithful is hard."
(Nehemiah 9:20) "You gave your good Spirit to instruct them. ..."
(Isaiah 48:16‑17) ""Come near me and listen to this: ... now the Sovereign LORD has sent me, with his Spirit. {17} This is what the LORD says‑‑ your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: "I am the LORD your God, who teaches you what is best for you, who directs you in the way you should go."
3B. Reveals the Will of God
(Psalms 143:10) "Teach me to do your will, for you are my God; may your good Spirit lead me on level ground."
3A. HIS WORK OF SANCTIFICATION
1B. Equip God’s People
The building of the Tabernacle (Exodus 31:1-6)
2B. Enable God’s People
God enabled Gideon to win the victory
(Judges 6:34) "Then the Spirit of the LORD came upon Gideon, and he blew a trumpet, summoning the Abiezrites to follow him."
“Came upon” = Clothed himself with Gideon
3B. Empower God’s People
Samson (Judges 14:6; 19; 15:14; 16:28-30)
