THE HOLY SPIRIT

HIS PRESENCE: PENTECOST

Acts 2:1-4

INTRODUCTION

Pentecost (Leviticus 23:15-ff)

Followed Passover by 50 days

Celebrated for 1500 years

Grain made into two loaves

10 animals sacrificed (7 lambs, 1 bull & 2 rams)

The Loaves represent the church - Jew and Gentile

The oil in the bread represents the Holy Spirit

Ten is the number of completion & the blood shed represents the completed work of Christ.

Pentecost is Important...

The average Christian and the average church are somewhere bogged down between Calvary and Pentecost. They have been to Calvary for pardon, but they have not been to Pentecost for power. Bethlehem means God with us. Calvary means God for us. Pentecost means God in us.

We are afraid of Pentecost

Vance Havner said the average Christian is so afraid of getting out on a limb we never even bother to climb up a tree

What Does Pentecost Show?...

1A.       THE PROPHECY THAT WAS FULFILLED (Joel 2: 28-29)

A predicted day (Acts 2:17-18)

(Joel 2:28‑29)  "'And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. {29} Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days."

A purposeful day

(John 14:16)  "And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever‑‑"

(John 14:20)  "On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you."

A promised day

(Acts 1:4‑5)  "On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: "Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. {5} For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.""

2A.       THE PRESENCE THAT WAS FELT

The Spirit comes in a new and personal way.

(John 14:17) ... But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you."

1B.       The Spirit Indwells the Church Corporately

(1 Peter 2:5)  "you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ."

(Ephesians 2:22)  "And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit."

(1 Corinthians 3:16)  "Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit lives in you?"

This means that the Holy Spirit is present in the fellowship of our Church.

In Luke 2 Christ was born into a physical body!

In Acts 2 Christ was born into a spiritual body - the Church!

2B.       The Spirit Indwells Christians Personally

(1 Corinthians 6:19)  "Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you,

(1 Corinthians 12:13)  "For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body...

The Holy Spirit resides but does he rule?

Without the HS we are like an empty house.

3A.       THE POWER THAT FELL (2-3)

1B.       The Symbols

The Symbol of sound = the wind

Invisible

irresistible

Indispensable

A preacher was going to preach on the wind being an emblem of the Spirit of God and he said, "Who really would know the most about the wind?" He said, "I know who I'll talk to.

There's an old sea captain down here and he sailed by the wind, one of those old schooners." And he went down and he talked to him and he said, "Captain tell me everything you know about the wind." He thought he was going to get a long speech and the captain said, "I'll make it brief. I know very little about the wind. It is so mysterious."

He said, "I'll tell you what I do know. I know how to set my sails."

I don't want to be able to understand the Holy Spirit, who can. But I want to know how to be able to set my sails when the wind of God's spirit blows.

Of Sight = the fire

Cleanses

Consumes

2B.       The Significance - Enabled them to...

Witness boldly (1:8; 4:29-30)

The same men that could not convince Thomas were now converting a city.

Witness wisely (6:10)

(Luke 21:15)  "For I will give you words and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict."

Worship freely (2:40-41)

4A.       THE PERMANENCE THAT WAS FOUND

(John 14:16)  "And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever‑‑"

Before Pentecost the Spirit came upon special people for special purposes...

After Pentecost the Spirit came to indwell all believers permanently!

No More Seeking - No More Supposition!

However, we can grieve, quench, and ignore the  Holy Spirit!

Therefore we must stay clean and consumed!

APPLICATION

Are You Experiencing the Presence of the HS?

Are You Encountering the Power of the HS?

Are You Enjoying the Permanence of the HS?

How Can You Have the Power of the HS?

Like you got saved - Simple Faith!

Like getting Married - A life long experience of understanding this new relationship. That’s what it means to experience the presence, power, & permanence of the Holy Spirit!

A life long love relationship!
