Proverbs 6:16-19

INTRODUCTION

There are some things I just don’t like...

Greens

Liver

Uncomfortable shoes

Ties

There are some things I really don’t like...

Pushy salesmen

Doing my income tax

Going to the Doctor

There are some things I hate...

Sin and Satan

Injustice

There are some things that God hates...

First,the word for hate literally means to hate in a personal sense.

Second, he tells us that these are detestable to God. Meaning that they are disgusting to God.  This is the same word that the scriptures  uses to refer to  how God feels about idolatry.


What does God Hate?

(Proverbs 3:32)  "for the LORD detests a perverse man but takes the upright into his confidence."

(Proverbs 15:8‑9)  "The LORD detests the sacrifice of the wicked, but the prayer of the upright pleases him. {9} The LORD detests the way of the wicked but he loves those who pursue righteousness."

(Proverbs 15:26)  "The LORD detests the thoughts of the wicked, but those of the pure are pleasing to him."

1A.       A BOASTFUL ATTITUDE (17a)

“Haughty eyes”

(Proverbs 16:5)  "The LORD detests all the proud of heart. Be sure of this: They will not go unpunished."

1B.       Pride is Not Self-esteem

2B.       Pride is Not Rejoicing in Honor Given.

3B.       Pride is Not Satisfaction in a Job Well Done.

4B.       Pride is and Attitude of Independence from Go (James 4:13-17)

Pride is the Root of All Sin.

2A.       A BROKEN WORD  (v.17b)

"lying tongue"

(Proverbs 12:22)  "The LORD detests lying lips, but he delights in men who are truthful."

1B.       Lying involves Cheating

2B.       Lying involves Deceiving

3B.       Lying brings Destruction.

(Revelation 21:8)  "But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars‑‑their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.""

3A.       BLOODY HANDS  (v.17c)

“Hands that shed innocent blood”

"innocent" = blameless, clean

4A.       A BLACK HEART  (v.18a)

“A heart that devises wicked schemes”

(Genesis 6:5)  "The LORD saw how great man's wickedness on the earth had become, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time."

1B.       Engraved by Evil.

"devise" = to scratch, engrave.

 

(Jeremiah 17:9)  "The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?"

2B.       Energized by Vanity.

"wicked" = to exert oneself in vanity.

3B.       Inspired by Cunning.

"schemes" = means to weave together a plan based on cunning and human wisdom.

5A.       A BLUSHLESS LIFESTYLE  (v.18b)

“Feet that are quick to rush to evil”

1B.       Eagerness to do Evil.

"run"

2B.       End of the Evil.

"Evil" = to break to pieces, to ruin.

Jezebel - was unrepentant and bent on evil all of her days.

6A.       A BLATANT LIAR  (v.19a)

“A false witness who pours out lies”

(Psalms 101:5)  "Whoever slanders his neighbor in secret, him will I put to silence; whoever has haughty eyes and a proud heart, him will I not endure."

7A.       A BUSY BODY  (v.19b)

“A man who stirs up dissension among brothers”

(Galatians 5:19‑20)  "The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; {20} idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions"

(Romans 16:17)  "I urge you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Keep away from them."

APPLICATION

Ever feel like no one liked you?

I have good news...

(Romans 5:8)  "But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us."
