                                                                                              GOD'S ANSWER TO ANGER

Proverbs 19:11

INTRODUCTION

Do you ever get angry?

Of course you do.

There are two types of anger there is a good and righteous anger and there is a sinful and evil anger.

Unrighteous anger is the acid which destroys its container.

Four principles that outline God's Answer to Anger.

1A.       SUDDEN ANGER MUST BE CONTROLLED

1B.       A Scriptural Survey

Proverbs 14:17

Uncontrolled temper = fool

Proverbs 15:18

Sudden anger = fights

Proverbs 25:8

Sudden anger = shame

Proverbs 19:19

Sudden anger = Great Lose

What you stand to loose...

Friends

Job

Family

Health

2B.       A Scriptural Solution

Confess it

Don't repress it or express it - confess it

Consider it

Ask: Lord show me why am I getting so angry?

Control it

(Proverbs 29:11)  "A fool gives full vent to his anger, but a wise man keeps himself under control."

Argument - Yelling - Phone Rings, How do you answer?

2A.       SINFUL ANGER MUST BE CONDEMNED (19:11)

1B.       Test Your Anger - Is it Sinful?

Anger without cause

(Matthew 5:22)  "But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: ..."

Anger against a person rather that an injustice or offense.

Anger that seeks revenge

(Romans 12:19)  "Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God's wrath, for it is written: "It is mine to avenge; I will repay," says the Lord."

Anger that is cherished - Dearly love your anger

Anger accompanied by an unforgiving spirit

2B.       Be Careful Not to Justify Your Anger

Remember sinful anger is not a weakness it is wickedness

You cannot blame it on heredity or circumstances

You must accept full responsibility!

3A.       STUBBORN ANGER IS TO BE CONQUERED

1B.       The Danger of Stubborn Anger (Ephesians 4:26)

Unresolved anger opens the door for Satan

2B.       The Disaster of Stubborn Anger (4:31)

Your hurt becomes resentment

Feeling of resentment for being wronged

(Hebrews 12:15)  "See to it that no one misses the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many."

Your resentment turns to rage

Rage = "To burn;" to simmer, stew

Your rage becomes full blown anger

Refers to that which is on the outside

Your anger is expressed by brawling (clamor)

Loud speech

Your brawling (clamor) disintegrate into slander (evil speaking)

Begin to say things you don't mean.

Your slander finally end in malice

A desire to hurt and harm.

Physical

Psychological

Financial

Spiritual

3B.       The Defeat of Stubborn Anger

Recognize it

Repent of it

Renounce it (and Satan)

Rely upon God the Holy Spirit (4:32)

4A.       SANCTIFIED ANGER NEEDS TO BE CHANNELED (4:26)

Mark 3:1-6

1B.       Must Be the Right Type of Anger

A righteous anger - anger that originates with and reflects God

This anger is motivated by a love for others not by a love for self!

2B.       Must Have the Right Reason to be Angry

Jesus was angry because they were abusive and unsensitive to the needs of the handicapped man

It should anger us when others purposely and callously take advantage of others - especially spiritually!

3B.       Must Have the Right Expression of our Anger

Christ’s expression of his anger was to help the man who needed help, no matter the personal cost!

APPLICATION

Anger can be either destructive or constructive....

We must identify our anger...

Is my anger an action or reaction? - Is it controlled or out of control?

Am I angry at a person or an injustice? - Does my anger seek restoration or revenge?

Is my anger a result of resentment and bitterness?

Is my anger self-centered or others-centered?

Sudden anger must be controlled.

Sinful anger must be condemned.

Stubborn anger must be conquered.

Sanctified anger must be channeled.

You will either rule over your anger (by God’s grace) or be ruled by your anger... What will it be?
