Vision Recap

Excited about Vision - Learn through Mark | In this world, distracted | Enemy can’t destroy you he’ll distract you - Take you away from Jesus, away from who God call you | Greatest Tragedy, when someone doesn’t fulfill calling | Let’s be reminded to look up | Theme about Centering, walking ,living, being with, JESUS
351 prophecies in the OT | start reading in MArk 1, we will read a couple | It was all leading to this, messiah

The Word Christ

Christ in Greek means “Messiah” “Annointed one” but more than a name “weight” | built with expectation | Encourage to read again, or with us with this in mind | “Christ” is not just his last name but a weight of expectation of a saviour, son of god, prophecies being fulfilled that God would send a saviour |
God was both Just and Merciful
Only one to be both | God sat on his thrown judged us guilty | punishment is death | God paid penalty | decided to send son | Born of a virgin to die on cross | Jess came, was baptised, holy spirit decended, spent 40 days in wilderness being tempted - turned the his faith and the word, chose 12 disciples to change the world, wore our sins on the cross, died, rose again, same spirit.
We now find ourselves in a courtroom | with a judge | you have the enemy yelling accusations “Not good enough” etc | good lawyer in Jesus Christ defending you | and guess who testifies, Blood - Every time | God will Judge that your sins have been painted forgiven by the blood of Jesus | calls you forgiven…| If we do one thing …Repent. | can turn from our old ways and totally repent | it’s the path to forgiveness | Sacrafice has been paid, god is calling, we must repent.
INTRO TO MESSAGE
Learn through Mark | Where we begin today | “Immediate Gospel” | Quick, might go to other gospels for commentary | Word verifies Word | About DOING | paints him Servant |
Start in Chapter 1 and break it down | What ever we don’t get through connect group which will be theme throughout the year | If you want the juicy stuff, get in a connect group | In temple and in homes (like acts)
Mark 1:1–8 ESV
The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. As it is written in Isaiah the prophet, “Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way, the voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight,’ ” John appeared, baptizing in the wilderness and proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And all the country of Judea and all Jerusalem were going out to him and were being baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. Now John was clothed with camel’s hair and wore a leather belt around his waist and ate locusts and wild honey. And he preached, saying, “After me comes he who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. I have baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”
The first verse really speaks to diety of Jesus | Beginning of GOOD NEWS of JC | The wieghty, expected, messiah, then re-iterated it with son of god
Mark then brings 2 OT scriptures in | Malachi 3:1 and isiah 40:3 | Interesting, in the beginning, then mentions OT | Story of JC started in OT | He pretences what he is about to record with OT Testament Prophecy |
The word here for Lord in verse 3 is Yahweh - God - it means “I AM” back in the old testimant this word was too sacred to even mutter, he is saying that GOD is coming.***
So we have OT that tells us the one that prepares the way - John the baptist | Big Deal, big crowds, not prophet, preaching repentence for forgiveness | Think about this | Jewish Context:
Jewish context on forgiveness of sins
Leveticus told the jews to cleanse themselves from ritual impurities contracted from touching corpeses, lepars etc | washing fulfilled the law of ritual purity so you could sacrafice at the temple. Later gentiles baptised as a sign of the covenent given to abraham. So baptism gave them purity, but not forgiveness of sins. they still had to follow the law
Still doing animal sacrafices when John was preaching to come and repent | John was saying No sacrafice needed | Think about this, no sacrafice to be baptised and forgiven | REPENTENCE paved the way
Repentence leads us to forgiveness | can’t get oen without other | it’s aknowledgement we have sinned | uncomfortable | on other side is love from our Abba , Forgiveness, better way | Complete shift |
Difference of when kids say sorry
2 Chronicles 7:14 ESV
if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.
Huge move of God | People where gathering for one reason, to confess | Tough to do, not like selling a ticket to a concert | We don’t like to talk about Sin- We hide it, ignore it, lean into it, or normalise it | don’t want to look | This crowd was big, verse 5 says “all country”
In Lukes Gospel it gives us biblical insight into repentence, it says it allows us to hear God and RESPOND in a repsonsible manner.
if we don’t repent, the word of God bounces off, and we say “yeah what ever” the prep the same . “Repentance” opens doors to God
Repentence opens the door to God | John is preparing the hearts of ppl to hear message of the gospel |
So we have Jewish Mindset of needing sacrafice, laws, commandments, and you have John “Just repent”
What;s Missing from Jewish perspective? Sacrafice | Ppl are thinking “Seems legit but where is sacrafice?”
in John it says “The Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world” - Forgiveness purchased. People where preparing people, getting their hearts ready to receive this lamb who would take sin...
So we have John baptising people, precahing repentence and now what?
Mark 1:6–8 ESV
Now John was clothed with camel’s hair and wore a leather belt around his waist and ate locusts and wild honey. And he preached, saying, “After me comes he who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. I have baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”
Comment on clothing | John has the right order, sees himself as he ought |
explain illustration of sandles, jew slaves
Not devaluing himself, but rightly valueing God |
John he points people to and prepares them for Jesus, by showing their Sin, by calling them to Repent, calls them out John also speaks of Free Forgiveness, he baptises them, and he tells them that Jesus is the one and Jesus will do something John could never do (Take the sin away from the world) and then what?
He then says “I have baptised you with…”
Baptism is immersing, immersing in water | immersing God | There will be a filling |
So now we move onto baptism of JC | where ever jesus goes is great
Mark 1:9–11 ESV
In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And when he came up out of the water, immediately he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”
This is enigma: Johns baptism was from Sin, but Jesus did not sin so why baptise? it’s identity, he is submitting, Why? He is saying “I am here to be among you” | 3 years after he hung on a cross | He was judged for our sin, he became sin, he identified with us | When he comes up we get this lovely picture |
Then God says after baptism… | Certain things we crave to hear from our father (Biological) | Not all of us grew up in loving families | I know I didn’t - This was a revelation, hope you feel if you are in the same boat, even if you’re not | The few things we all need to hear from a role model…or loved: I believe in you, I am proud of you ,no matter what I will always love you | This is what father is saying… | says this BEFORE everytihng | He said you are my son, from heaven | If you are at a place where you need to repent , or you don’t want an old way, or a habit, or living a certain way | you can come, lay it at foot of cross, repent | and your abba father will forgive and say “I believe..I am proud…no matter | Not conditional on the works or laws | Fathers love readily availble, knocking , but we must come in , through repentence | Wound of God, hurts him, fixed repentence, traded for forgiveness
We then read jesus in wilderness
tempted for 40 days | we hear about the end, but think of the trauma | Faced temptations, tempted, starving, struggling, 40 days - tempted when he was weakest, still did not sin - turned to word and faith | Jesus defeated temptation and now is the source | Source to defeat Sin
Jesus begins ministry
We get to the end of our passage today as jesus begins his ministry - Wow what a prep | After all this, ready to minister | heart tested, identified with sinners and now says:
Mark 1:14–15 ESV
Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”
2 things happening
Proclaming himself messiah - The time is fulfilled (OT)
he gets to the heart, the way to the kingdom of God is..repentence
Key Theme throughout Mark 1 as jesus asks us to drop things in our life, sin, possessions, all we have and FOLLOW HIM.
Conclusion
Mark gospel of Deeds | shows servant nature | Starts with Realisation of all we need to come to Christ is repent | This year we fixate on Jesus | Just Jesus, walk, do, be with | to grow our relationship with God to HEAR GOD we must repent, might be difficult , uncomfortable but hear me, No sin too big for God to forgive.
Sin may be great, but our fathers love is greater.
Every day I get to my knees, not worthy - Grateful for forgiveness, i know what I am without him | Walk in Freedom knowing Jesus paid the price.
As we go through mark open heart | God so loved the world, sent his son will not perish, they shall have eternal life.
We can’t earn it, deserve it, get it
