Through Us: Service

A Spiritual Gift is a God-given ability to serve God in and through the body!

Facts about Spiritual Gifts

Every believer has at least one

They are sovereign gifts

They are for the building up of the church

They are to bring glory to Christ!

The word Charismatic means ASpiritual gifts@

Three Categories:

Speaking Gifts

Serving Gifts

Sign Gifts

Tonight we will look at the gift of Tongues...

Rule of thumb...

Scripture not experience is a basis of truth and revelation.

1A.       WHAT IS THE BIBLICAL DEFINITION OF THE GIFT OF TONGUES?

1B.       They were understandable languages (Acts 2:4,11)

Aglossa@ = primarily means human language

The only other place use in this way is 1 Corinthians

ADialektos@ = dialect, human language (Acts 2:6,8)

2B.       They were used only when someone would benefit from them - to spread the Gospel

The Day of Pentecost (Acts 2:4-12)

Peter in the Home of Cornelius (Acts 10)

(Acts 10:46)  "For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God. ...,"

Paul in Ephesus (Acts 19)

(Acts 19:6)  "When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied."

3B.       The word Aunknown@ in the KJV of 1 Corinthians 14 is not in the original

They made have been Aunknown@ to the speaker but they were not Aunknown@ to the interpreter.

4B.       The supposed Aheavenly@ language of 1 Corinthians 13:1

Paul is using a hyperbole - an exaggeration

Tongues is and understandable language!!! not gibberish!

2A,       WHAT ARE THE BIBLICAL GUIDELINES FOR PRACTICING TONGUES?

1 Corinthians 14:26-27; 33-35; 40

Remember the Corinthians were saved out of the depth of sin

Guidelines for speaking in tongues - to discourage them from speaking in tongues

1B.       It must strengthen the Church (26)

2B.       No more than three shall speak in a given service (27a)

3B.       Only one at a time (27b)

4B.       There must be an interpreter (27c)

5B.       It must not cause disorder or confusion in the Church (33, 40)

6B.       Women are not to speak in tongues in public worship (34-35)

3A.       WHAT IS THE BIBLICAL PURPOSE OF TONGUES?

1B.       To Evangelize the Unsaved (Acts 2)

2B.       To Edify the Saints (1 Corinthians 14:1-5)

Beware of the danger of pride (36-38)

Remember the priority of communication (6-12)

3B.       To Educate the Jews (14:20-22)

They are a judgement sign to unbelieving Jews

(Isaiah 28:11‑12)  "Very well then, with foreign lips and strange tongues God will speak to this people, {12} to whom he said, "This is the resting place, let the weary rest"; and, "This is the place of repose"‑‑ but they would not listen."

Fulfilled in 586 BC with the Babylonians and then finally fulfilled in 70 AD with the Romans

4A.       WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY ABOUT TONGUES TODAY? (1 Corinthians 13:8-12)

1B.       Tongues Ended with the completion of the Scriptures

APerfect@ = refers to the completed cannon

The gift of tongues no longer exists

Many accept this view including John McArthur

2B.       Tongues will continue until the appearance of Christ

Charismatic feel that tongues are still active and indicate a higher level of spirituality.

3B.       Tongues are a indication of Spiritual immaturity (Evans)

APerfect@ = teleios; mature, complete

1 Corinthians 2:6

2 Corinthians 7:1

This fits the context of 1 Corinthians 13 (11)

As we mature in our faith we can depend more on God written revelation and less on signs.... (14:20)

The closer we are to Jesus the more clearly we see Him! (13:12)

APPLICATION
