INTRODUCTION

A Spiritual Gift is a God-given ability to serve God in and through the body!

Facts about Spiritual Gifts

Every believer has at least one

They are sovereign gifts

They are for the building up of the church

They are to bring glory to Christ!

The word Charismatic means “Spiritual gifts”

Three Categories:

Speaking Gifts

Serving Gifts

Sign Gifts

Tonight we will look at the gift of Tongues...

Rule of thumb...

Scripture not experience is a basis of truth and revelation.

1A.       WHAT IS THE BIBLICAL DEFINITION OF THE GIFT OF TONGUES?

1B.       Tongues are understandable languages

Two terms

glossa primarily means human language (Acts 2:4, 11; the only other place it is used in this way is 1 Corinthians)

Dialektos dialect, human language (Acts 2:6, 8)

2B.       Tongues were used only when someone would benefit from them - to spread the Gospel

The Day of Pentecost (Acts 2:4-12)

Peter in the home of Cornelius (Acts 10)

Acts 10:46 For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God. Then Peter answered,

Paul in Ephesus (Acts 19)

Acts 19:6 And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied.

3B.       The word “unknown” in the KJV of 1 Corinthians 14:2 is not in the original

They made have been “unknown” to the speaker but they were not “unknown” to the interpreter.

4B.       The supposed “heavenly” language of 1 Corinthians 13:1

Paul is using a hyperbole - an exaggeration

Tongues is and understandable language not gibberish!

2A,       WHAT ARE THE BIBLICAL GUIDELINES FOR PRACTICING TONGUES?  (1 Corinthians 14:26-27; 33-35; 40)

Remember the Corinthians were saved out of the depth of sin

Guidelines for speaking in tongues - to discourage them from speaking in tongues

1B.       It must strengthen the Church (14:26)

2B.       No more than three shall speak in a given service (14:27a)

3B.       Only one at a time (14:27b)

4B.       There must be an interpreter (14:27c)

5B.       It must not cause disorder or confusion in the Church (14:33, 40)

6B.       Women are not to speak in tongues in public worship (14:34-35)

This command does not prohibit women from speaking or praying in public.  (1 Corinthians 11:5)

3A.       WHAT IS THE BIBLICAL PURPOSE OF TONGUES?

1B.       To evangelize the lost (Acts 2)

2B.       To edify the saints (1 Corinthians 14:1-5)

Beware of the danger of pride (14:36-38)

Remember the priority of communication (14:6-12)

3B.       To educate the Jews (14:20-22)

Tongues came as a judgment sign to the unbelieving Jews.

Isaiah 28:11-12 For with stammering lips and another tongue He will speak to this people, 12 To whom He said, "This is the rest with which You may cause the weary to rest," And, "This is the refreshing"; Yet they would not hear.

This prophecy was partially fulfilled in 586 BC with the Babylonians and then finally fulfilled in 70 AD with the Romans destruction of the Temple.

4A.       WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY ABOUT TONGUES TODAY?  (1 Corinthians 13:8-12)

1B.       Tongues will continue until the appearance of Christ

Charismatic feel that tongues are still active and indicate a higher level of spirituality.

2B.       Tongues are an indication of Spiritual immaturity

Perfect teleios; mature, complete

1 Corinthians 2:6 6However, we speak wisdom among those who are mature, yet not the wisdom of this age, nor of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing.

2 Corinthians 7:1 1Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

As we mature in our faith we can depend more on God written revelation and less on signs.  (14:20)

3B.       Tongues ended with the completion of the New Testament

Cease (pauo) to stop to come to an end, middle voice, literally to stop oneself, God built into tongues a stopping place

Prophecy and knowledge will be vanish away, (katargeo) to reduce to inactivity to abolish, passive voice; something, the coming of the perfect (the final eternal state) will end them.

Tongues have ceased because they were sign gifts of apostolic authority.  (1 Corinthians 14:27-28; 2 Corinthians 12:12)

Tongues have ceased because they were a sign to unbelieving Israel’s of God’s judgment.  (1 Corinthians 14:21-22).

Ø       The destruction of the Temple in AD70 fulfilled this prophecy.
