Recap

John 12:21 CSB
21 So they came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and requested of him, “Sir, we want to see Jesus.”
“Sir, show us Jesus!”
Do you want to see Jesus?
(Let’s pray …)
(Why do we need to see who Jesus is?)
After all ...
We have a vague idea, sufficient
Jesus is different things to different people
This much we have in common:
He is nice!
He is benevolent
He can be all powerful
But, have you really met Him?
… Why are you looking for Jesus?
like Paul met Jesus?
like the woman at the well, met Jesus?
John 4:1–14 CSB
1 When Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard he was making and baptizing more disciples than John 2 (though Jesus himself was not baptizing, but his disciples were), 3 he left Judea and went again to Galilee. 4 He had to travel through Samaria; 5 so he came to a town of Samaria called Sychar near the property that Jacob had given his son Joseph. 6 Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, worn out from his journey, sat down at the well. It was about noon. 7 A woman of Samaria came to draw water. “Give me a drink,” Jesus said to her, 8 because his disciples had gone into town to buy food. 9 “How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?” she asked him. For Jews do not associate with Samaritans. 10 Jesus answered, “If you knew the gift of God, and who is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would ask him, and he would give you living water.” 11 “Sir,” said the woman, “you don’t even have a bucket, and the well is deep. So where do you get this ‘living water’? 12 You aren’t greater than our father Jacob, are you? He gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and livestock.” 13 Jesus said, “Everyone who drinks from this water will get thirsty again. 14 But whoever drinks from the water that I will give him will never get thirsty again. In fact, the water I will give him will become a well of water springing up in him for eternal life.”
like the mother of the dying girl …? (Mark 5: 21-43)
like Peter met Jesus after Jesus resurrection?
Have you seen Jesus like them?
((Hope that this sermon will show you,
Jesus,
and that it is a meeting with Jesus,
… seeing Him face to face,
that will have you see yourself in a whole new way!))

What we have seen so far

From being announced as the One who would Come (The Messiah) the Anointed One
Baptised!
(a sign of the turning away from sin)
and … Tempted!
we read ...
Mark 1:12 CSB
12 Immediately the Spirit drove him into the wilderness.
Tempted!
In the wilderness!
Mark 1:13 CSB
13 He was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and the angels were serving him.

From Questions … towards an Answer

Mark 1:14 CSB
14 After John was arrested, Jesus went to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God:
A one line sermon!
The elements of a good preacher
The Word (Logos)
The Character (the Ethos)
The compassion (the Pathos)

Jesus’ (the) Word

Jesus taught … the Word
History (when? what happened?)
Geography (where)
His lesson:
Mark 1:15 CSB
15 “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!”

Jesus Character

Fully human
born, baptised, tempted
Fully God!
Proclaimed as Messiah
Served by the Angels
God Himself declares:
“You are My beloved Son!” (Mk 1:11)
////////
Don’t you wish you were there?

Jesus’ Compassion

Why do we need to know about Jesus Compassion?
Because, I hope, it will lead us to the request: “Show us this Jesus!”
Why do we need to see Jesus??
Because He may well be the Messiah
and if He is …
surely we need to know?!
We need to know His Word
We need to know His Character
(which we may get to know by His Word … and His deeds!
Mark 1:15 CSB
15 “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!”
And we need to know His Compassion
And now Jesus begins to act!
Mark 1:16–20 CSB
16 As he passed alongside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew, Simon’s brother, casting a net into the sea—for they were fishermen. 17 “Follow me,” Jesus told them, “and I will make you fish for people.” 18 Immediately they left their nets and followed him. 19 Going on a little farther, he saw James the son of Zebedee and his brother John in a boat putting their nets in order. 20 Immediately he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him.
Jesus Word shines through
(His calling)
(His Mission)
*Elders elect?!
(Have you heard the call?
(Have you figured out your mission?)
Jesus’ character shines through
He chooses the ordinary
the Humble
the dazed and confused!
NOT
the Self-assured
the Self-rigteous
the Elite and the Important
but those who know they are never above God!
and therefore:
Peter, with His doubt
(repent, believe!)
Paul, with his persecution and sense of duty at all costs
(repent, believe … “Who are you, Lord?)
The woman at the well, with her shame and disappointment
who asks Jesus:
John 4:9–10 CSB
9 “How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?” she asked him. For Jews do not associate with Samaritans. 10 Jesus answered, “If you knew the gift of God, and who is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would ask him, and he would give you living water.”
And now … “Simon”, Andrew, (Follow me!)
and James and Zebedee ...
(Follow me!)
And His compassion shines through
Get to know me ...
Walk with me ...
See my care for God’s people
as I heal them
as I teach them
as I take away there sin (point to the Cross)
Are you starting to see more clear?
In this world you live
In this wilderness
You are lost!
You will die!
And your children will die
But remember this:
Mark 1:14–15 CSB
14 After John was arrested, Jesus went to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God: 15 “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!”
And Jesus still calls people to follow Him
and become fishers of Mankind
And when we see Him for who He really is (through all that reveals Him, in His Word, in His Majesty!)
As we See Him!
As we Hear Him!
As we See ourselves!
We will come to understand His claim, to His disciples, just before He was crucified:
John 14:6 CSB
6 Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
Let’s read it:
John 14:1–7 CSB
1 “Don’t let your heart be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. 2 In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? 3 If I go away and prepare a place for you, I will come again and take you to myself, so that where I am you may be also. 4 You know the way to where I am going.” 5 “Lord,” Thomas said, “we don’t know where you’re going. How can we know the way?” 6 Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you know me, you will also know my Father. From now on you do know him and have seen him.”
Have you seen Jesus?
Amen
