John 17:1-8

INTRODUCTION

What is the driving force in your life?

Many people are driven by guilt

Ø       Guilt-driven people are manipulated by memories.

Many people are driven by resentment and anger

Ø       They hold on to hurts and never get over them.

Many people are driven by fear.

Ø       Fear-driven people play it safe thereby robbing themselves of some of life’s greatest blessings.

Many people are driven by materialism.

Ø       Materialistic people are driven by the desire to have more stuff.

Many people are driven by the need for approval.

Ø       They are driven by the desire to meet the expectations of others.

How will you know if you are a success?

You can only measure success if you have a clear goal and standard!

The Scriptures tell us that Jesus is our standard and to live like him is our goal.  Jesus lived His life with purpose.

If our goal is to be like Christ, we need to discover - What was the driving for in Jesus’ life.

His motives must become our motives, His goals must become our goals, and his purposes must become our purposes!

One thing we know is that Jesus lived with purpose.

1A.       He Lived to Exalt the Father (17:4)

1B.       Jesus was constantly pointing men to God!

John 13:31 So, when he had gone out, Jesus said, Now the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in Him.

This is worship!

2B.       We are to point men to God by glorifying Him.

1 Corinthians 10:31 Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

Matthew 22:37 Jesus said to him, You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.'

2A.       He Lived to Make Disciples (17:6-8)

1B.       Jesus intentionally sought to bring people to faith in God.

Matthew 28:18-20 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen.

Luke 19:10 for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.

Ø       The woman at the well is a perfect example (John 4)

Ø       We are to build relationship in order to bring others to God!

2B.       Jesus consistently discipled those He brought to faith in God.

For three years Christ taught and poured His life into His disciples

Acts 4:13  Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated and untrained men, they marveled. And they realized that they had been with Jesus.

We must pour our lives into others, we must be discipling others.

2 Timothy 2:2 And the things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.

How do we accomplish this task?

Ø       Model the proper disciplines and service, the most powerful teaching method is modeling.

Ø       Mentor, help them put into practice those things the Lord has commanded us to do.

Ø       Monitor, hold them accountable.

Ø       Mobilize,

Ø       Multiply, encourage our disciples to be disciplers.

This is evangelism and missions!

3A.       He Lived to Build Strong Relationships Among His Followers (17:12)

1B.       Jesus protected and preserved the fellowship!

John 13:35 By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.

2B.       We must work to build fellowship with other believers

Ephesians 4:3 endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace

This is the purpose of Christian fellowship

4A.       He Lived to Minister to Others (17:18)

1B.       Jesus came to minister not to be ministered to.

Matthew 20:27-28  And whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave --  28just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many."

2B.       He has saved us to serve.

John 20:21  So Jesus said to them again, Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.

Ø       We have too many pickle Christians...They sit and sour!

3B.       We are commanded to love others and to demonstrate that love.

Matthew 22:39 …You shall love your neighbor as yourself

The greatest demonstration of love are going and giving

James 2:20  But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead?

APPLICATION
